Event Replay:

On June 28, 2008, Lanzhou City’s *** First Hospital admitted the first patient Infants and young children with "kidney stone" disease. Parents reported that their children have been eating Sanlu infant milk powder produced by Sanlu Group in Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province since birth. In mid-July, after the Gansu Provincial Health Department received a report of urinary stone cases in infants from the hospital, it immediately launched an investigation and reported it to the Ministry of Health. In just over two months, the number of infants admitted to the hospital quickly expanded to 14. On September 11, similar cases occurred in other provinces and regions in China except Gansu Province. After investigation by relevant departments, it is highly suspected that the products of Shijiazhuang Sanlu Group are contaminated by melamine. Melamine is a chemical raw material that can cause stones in the human urinary system. On the evening of the same day, Sanlu Group issued a product recall announcement stating that in order to be responsible to consumers, the company decided to immediately recall approximately 700 tons of milk powder products from the market.

On September 13, the Ministry of Health confirmed that the melamine contained in Sanlu brand milk powder was artificially added by criminals to increase the protein content of raw milk or milk powder. The Sanlu poisoned milk case began in Hebei on December 27, 2008, and the verdict was handed down on January 22, 2009. In total, 6 babies died from drinking poisonous milk, and more than 300,000 children became sick. Sanlu declared bankruptcy after suspending production.

Hazards of "Melamine":

Melamine is a nitrogen heterocyclic organic compound produced from urea. It is a white monoclinic crystal at room temperature and has no obvious odor. Currently it is mainly used in the production processes of wood processing, plastics, coatings, papermaking, adhesives, textiles, leather, electrical appliances, medicine, flame retardants, etc.

Animal toxicology experiments show that acute toxicity experiments were carried out by administering melamine to mice. A large number of crystals accumulated in the ureters of mice that died by intragastric administration, and the kidney membranes of some mice were covered with crystals. . Animals were fed continuous melamine feed and subjected to subchronic toxicity tests. Lymphocyte infiltration was seen in the kidneys of the test animals, and crystals appeared in the renal tubule lumen; while biochemical indicators showed a gradual increase in serum urea nitrogen BUN and creatinine CRE. Based on previous animal toxicology experiments and the current clinical manifestations of infants and young children who have ingested melamine-contaminated milk powder, it is possible that melamine may cause multiple urinary tract stones in children. There is currently no direct evidence that melamine causes damage to other tissue systems.

Clinical symptoms that may occur when infants and young children consume milk powder containing melamine:

1. Unexplained crying, especially during urination, which may be accompanied by vomiting;

2. Gross or microscopic hematuria;

3. Acute obstructive renal failure, manifested by oliguria or anuria;

4. Stones can be excreted in the urine, such as in baby boys Stones blocking the urethra may cause painful urination and difficulty urinating;

5. There may be high blood pressure, edema, and percussion pain in the kidney area.

The above is what I have compiled for you. You are welcome to read and collect it.
