Southeast University is one of the earliest institutions of higher learning in China. Its predecessor, Sanjiang Teachers College, was founded in 1902 and 192 1, which was strongly advocated by Mr. Guo Bingwen, a famous educator in modern times. Southeast University was formally established on the basis of Nanjing Normal University and became one of the only two national comprehensive universities in China at that time. Mr. Guo Bingwen became the first principal. He visits many famous teachers every week, and dozens of famous scholars and experts gather in Dongda University. Therefore, he has the reputation that "Peking University is famous for its literature, history and philosophy, while Dongda is famous for its philosophy". Different from Nanjing University's choice of a new motto, Southeast University resumed the old motto of "stop at perfection" after extensive discussion and soliciting opinions from experts and scholars in many ways during its centenary celebration.

Professor Dong Qun of Dongda University of Humanities, who has studied the school motto, said that "stop at perfection" was the school motto of Old Southeast University, which was engraved on the silver round school emblem at that time. One of the reasons for restoring this old school motto is due to the consideration of history and life consciousness, that is, the school motto should reflect the long history tradition and life details of Southeast University. "Best" can also be understood as the realm of "best", not only satisfied with getting better and better, but striving to be the best, first-class and high-level. To be a student, we should strive to be the best student; To be a teacher, you must be the best teacher; To do management, we must do the best management; To run a university, we must make it a first-class university. "Stop at the best" is a fine tradition accumulated by Dongda University for a hundred years.
