What is a geographical indication product?

Geographical indication products include two parts: ① cultivated and cultured products from this area; (2) All raw materials come from this region or some from other regions, and the products are produced and processed in this region according to specific processes.

Geographical indications refer to the unique signs in a specific region, and their product quality and related characteristics mainly depend on the natural ecological environment and historical and cultural factors, and are named after the region. The so-called agricultural products refer to the primary products derived from agriculture, that is, plants, animals, microorganisms and their products obtained in agricultural activities. The Ministry of Agriculture is responsible for the registration and protection of geographical indications of agricultural products throughout the country. The Agricultural Products Quality and Safety Center of the Ministry of Agriculture is responsible for the registration, examination, expert review and publicity of geographical indications of agricultural products. The administrative department of agriculture of the people's government at the provincial level shall be responsible for the acceptance and preliminary examination of the application for the registration and protection of geographical indications of agricultural products within their respective administrative areas. The expert review committee for the registration of geographical indications of agricultural products established by the Ministry of Agriculture is responsible for the expert review. The registration management of geographical indications of agricultural products is a public welfare behavior serving the vast number of agricultural producers, which is mainly promoted by the government and registered free of charge. Geographical indications of agricultural products are important natural and human resources of the country and belong to the public rights of regional resources. Enterprises and individuals cannot be used as applicants for the registration and protection of geographical indications of agricultural products.

To apply for the registration and protection of geographical indications of agricultural products, the following five conditions should be met: ① The name consists of geographical area names and common names of agricultural products; ② The products have unique quality characteristics or specific production methods; ③ The product quality and characteristics mainly depend on the unique natural ecological environment and human and historical factors; ④ Limited production area; ⑤ The production environment and product quality meet the requirements of national mandatory technical specifications.
