Extended data

Before the national liberation, the Tiananmen Gate Tower, like the whole city of Beijing, was dilapidated and had to be repaired several times after liberation.

1949 in the summer and autumn, in order to welcome founding ceremony, due to time constraints, the Beiping municipal authorities only concentrated on removing pigeon droppings, wormwood and other dirt accumulated in Tiananmen Gate for many years, and simply renovated the damaged tiles, doors and windows.

1952, the first meeting of the Fourth People's Congress of Beijing decided to completely repair Tiananmen Gate. This is the first large-scale renovation project in 260 years since 1690 (the 29th year of Emperor Kangxi of Qing Dynasty).

1956 renovated the northeast wing and corner beam of the tower, and lengthened the platform handrails.

1957 reinforced the inner wall of the tower, and the moth-eaten and decayed part in the center of the column was supported by an I-steel column. In the same year, lightning protection equipment was added.

1959, the grey observation deck on both sides of Jinshui Bridge was expanded to accommodate 30,000 people.

1963 pier joint and anticorrosion treatment were carried out for some decayed eaves columns.

1966, most of the five-frame beams, flower treads and grass frame columns on the old eaves of the tower are reinforced.

From 65438 to 0988, the tower began to open to the public.
