World No Tobacco Day
Tobacco is a wild plant growing in South America. At first, Indians chewed tobacco leaves or made them into cigarettes to suck. Tobacco has prevailed in the world for more than 2 years, and it was not until the 2th century that human beings began to realize the harm of tobacco to human beings. In 1977, the American Cancer Society first proposed a publicity and education method to control smoking-No Tobacco Day. On this day, a nationwide publicity campaign on "Smoking is harmful to health" was carried out in the United States to discourage smokers from smoking that day, and shops stopped selling tobacco products for one day. The United States sets the Thursday of the third week of November as its own No Tobacco Day every year. Since then, Britain, Malaysia, Hong Kong and other countries and regions have also formulated no-tobacco days.
In November 1987, the United Nations World Health Organization suggested that April 7th every year be designated as "World No Tobacco Day", and it was implemented in 1988. However, since April 7th is the anniversary of the establishment of the World Health Organization, on this day every year, the World Health Organization puts forward a theme of health care requirements. In order not to interfere with the presentation of its health theme, the World Health Organization decided to designate May 31st of each year as World No Tobacco Day from 1989, and China also designated that day as China No Tobacco Day.
cigarettes contain more than 14 ingredients. There are more than 4 kinds of carcinogens in the smoke produced by smoking, and there are more than 1 kinds of substances that can promote the development of cancer, among which nicotine, carbon monoxide and many other metal compounds are the most harmful to human body. A cigarette contains enough nicotine to kill a mouse. The binding capacity of a large amount of carbon monoxide in cigarette smoke with hemoglobin is 24-3 times greater than that of oxygen, which seriously weakens the oxygen carrying capacity of red blood cells. Therefore, smoking accelerates blood coagulation and easily causes cardiovascular diseases such as myocardial infarction, stroke and myocardial hypoxia. More seriously, smokers also seriously hinder the health of others. The results show that a smoker does more harm to others than himself when smoking.
The tobacco problem has attracted more and more attention from all countries in the world. On May 21st, 23, at the World Health Assembly held in Geneva, the 192 member countries of the World Health Organization unanimously adopted the first global treaty to restrict tobacco-the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. The Convention requires that all countries should at least prohibit misleading tobacco advertisements by law, prohibit or restrict international activities and tobacco promotion activities sponsored by tobacco companies, suppress tobacco smuggling, prohibit the sale of cigarettes to minors, mark the warning that "smoking is harmful to health" on cigarette boxes with 3% to 5% area, and prohibit the use of deceptive words such as "low tar" and "light".
Every year, 4.9 million people worldwide die from smoking and related diseases. Some data show that the incidence of lung cancer, laryngeal cancer, coronary heart disease, circulatory system and trachea are 1 to 2 times higher than those of non-smokers for a long time, 6 to 1 times higher, 2 to 3 times higher, 3 times higher and 2 to 8 times higher. Passive smoking is more harmful. One hour of passive smoking every day is enough to destroy arterial blood vessels. Some women who live with smokers are six times more likely to develop lung cancer than ordinary people. According to Guangming Daily reported on December 12th, 23, among the 1.1 billion smokers in the world, there are 35 million in China, and the smoking rate of people over 15 years old is 31.1%.
At present, the number of smokers in the world is about 1.1 billion, and it is estimated that this number will reach 1.3 billion to 1.7 billion by 225. At present, the number of people who die from smoking and related diseases reaches 4.9 million every year, and the annual medical expenses and economic losses exceed 2 billion US dollars. The number of deaths and diseases caused by tobacco is well documented, but its role in leading to poverty growth has not attracted enough attention. 75% of the world's smokers are located in developing countries, and their household expenses for buying cigarettes are usually very high, which wastes the limited family resources that should be spent on nutrition, education and other necessary expenses. Tobacco cultivation also harms the environment. Tobacco crops grab soil nutrients, the fertilizers and pesticides used cause pollution, and flue-cured tobacco consumes a lot of forest resources. The latest research shows that nearly 5% of deforestation in tobacco-growing countries is related to tobacco processing.
