In 1996, Liping County governed 8 towns and 17 townships (including 2 ethnic townships): Defeng Town, Gaotun Town, Zhongchao Town, Mengyan Town, Aoshi Town, Shuikou Town, Hongzhou Town, Shangchong Town, Yongcong Township, Hue Yao Township, Luoli Township, Maogong Township, Jiuchao Township, Bazhai Township, Yandong Township, Koujiang Township, Shuangjiang Township, Leidong Yao Shui Township, Zhao Xingxiang, Long'e Township, Diping Township, Deshun Township, Dajia Township, Dehua Township and Pingzhai Township. The county government is located in Defeng Town.

In December 1999, Jiuchao Township and Yandong Township were abolished and Jiuchao Town and Yandong Town were established.

At the end of 2003, it governed 10 towns, 15 townships (including 2 ethnic townships), 1 street office, 403 village committees, and 18 neighborhood committees.

In December 2012, Long'e Township, Zhaoxing Township and Shuangjiang Township were abolished and Long'e Town, Zhaoxing Town and Shuangjiang Town were established.

In February 2014, Defeng Town and Gaotun Town were abolished and Defeng Street and Gaotun Street were established.

In December 2015, Diping Township, Maogong Township, and Yongcong Township were withdrawn from their villages and established as towns. As of January 2016, Liping County has jurisdiction over 25 township-level administrative districts, including 2 streets, 14 towns, 7 townships, and 2 ethnic townships.
