Regular script is undoubtedly the foundation of calligraphy. If you don’t lay this foundation well, your cursive writing will not be charming at all. Those ugly calligraphy gentlemen are most afraid of being asked to write regular script. They don't have such childlike skills. Comrade Li Banli, the former chairman of the Sichuan Calligraphers Association, was my father’s comrade-in-arms and best friend.

Mr. Li painted large slogans during the Anti-Japanese War, and his profound skills in regular characters were deeply loved by people in the base area. That year, my father and his elder brothers got together in Chengdu. Mr. Li Banli enthusiastically gave his father his most famous and proud "Song Tao" cursive banner.

But my father declined, saying that he only wanted his original block letters, and "forced" him to write the fan page in regular script. Uncle Banli was so angry that he scolded his father for bullying him. In the end, Uncle Ban Li had to spend several nights to write a small regular script fan with the title "Old Bamboo Accompanying Panda". He is fat and calls himself a panda, while my dad is thin and calls himself a bamboo. Mr. Ban Li wrote such a good work for his father but it was lost, which has always made me feel sad.

The only person who can force Uncle Banli to write regular script is probably my father. Under my instigation, when Uncle Banli came to Beijing that year, my father "forced" him to write regular script again. The old man had no choice but to write Du Fu's "Ascend the High" on the banner in capital letters.

This relieved our long-standing regret. Later, I shamelessly snatched love from my father and solemnly hung this calligraphy treasure in my home. on the wall. I dare say that there are very few such regular and beautiful calligraphy works among Master Banli's calligraphy works.
