National Science Popularization Day was initiated by the China Association for Science and Technology. Organizations and systems of science and technology associations at all levels across the country commemorate the "Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China and the People's Republic of China". Various science popularization activities held in connection with the promulgation and implementation of the Popularization Law are scheduled on the third weekend in September every year.

On June 29, 2002, my country's first law on science popularization - the "Law of the People's Republic of China on Popularization of Science and Technology" was officially promulgated and implemented.

On June 29, 2003, on the first anniversary of the promulgation of the Science Popularization Law, in order to set off a nationwide upsurge in publicity and implementation of the Science Popularization Law, the China Association for Science and Technology launched a series of nationwide Popular science activities. The National Science Popularization Day activities have always received great attention and concern from the leading comrades of the Central Committee, especially the Secretariat of the Central Committee. Since the National Science Popularization Day in 2004, leading comrades from the Secretariat of the Central Committee have visited the Beijing National Science Popularization Day event every year and participated in the Science Popularization Day activities with people from all walks of life in the capital, playing a very good role in setting an example. Major party and government leaders from across the country also participated in local science popularization day activities.

At the end of 2009, when listening to the work report of the Party Group of the China Association for Science and Technology, the Central Secretariat further clarified that it would continue to organize the National Science Popularization Day activities and proposed that "all comrades of the Central Secretariat must continue to participate in the National Science Popularization Day" "Activity" further reflects the concern, attention and support of the central leadership for the National Science Popularization Day activities.

On September 14, 2019, the 2019 National Science Popularization Day with the theme of "Praise for the Republic of China and Smart New Life" was launched simultaneously across the country.
