Kaihua Temple is located on the hillside of the Relic Mountain, 17 kilometers northeast of Gaoping City, Jincheng, Shanxi. It was founded during the Tongguang period of the Later Tang Dynasty (923-926 AD) in the Five Dynasties and was originally named Qingliang Temple. After the Main Hall was built in the sixth year of Xining in the Northern Song Dynasty (AD 1073), it was renamed "Kaihua Zen Yuan", so it has always been called Kaihua Temple. Kaihua Temple is the most valuable building, and the Main Hall is the main building in the temple. On January 6, 2017, the Institute of Archeology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences announced the latest archaeological excavation results of the Kaihua Temple Buddhist Pavilion site in Mengshan, Taiyuan. It said that the Mengshan Giant Buddha and Buddhist Pavilion were the largest cliff Buddhas and Buddhist pavilions in China during the Northern Dynasties. The Great Buddha is the second tallest Buddha in the world and the earliest large-scale stone Buddha statue in the world.
