The relocation of Tangshan Institute of Technology in Guizhou Branch of Jiaotong University.

After the "July 7th" Lugouqiao Incident broke out in 1937, Tangshan Institute of Technology of Jiaotong University (now Southwest Jiaotong University) was in the summer vacation, and most of the students went home to visit relatives, but the class of 1938, led by Professor Wu Jinghu, was doing an internship in railway surveying in Xishan, Beijing. The incident suddenly occurred and the situation was urgent. However, on the 1th, the campus of Tangshan Jiaotong University fell into the clutches of the Japanese aggressors. Sun Hongzhe, the president of Peking Union Medical College, died of illness and anger in November of that year.

In mid-November, upon learning that Sun Hongzhe, the president, died of illness, professors Huang Shouheng and Xu Yuanqi consulted with Li Zhongxiang, Hou Jiayuan and other alumni, and elected Mao Yisheng, the 1916 alumnus who had just completed the construction of Qiantang River Bridge, as the "elected president". Without the approval of the Ministry of Education, in order not to delay the enrollment work, Mao Yisheng, the elected president, published a "Dr. Mao Yisheng's Enrollment Notice" in the newspaper, which became a rare personal enrollment notice in the history of higher education in China. With the contact of Professor Xu Yuanqi and the strong support of Hou Jiayuan, director of Hunan-Guizhou Railway Bureau, Pei Yixiang, deputy director, and Qing Chengdao, chief engineer (all friends of Tang Academy), Tang Academy resumed school in Xiangtan, Hunan Province. On December 15th, Tangshan Institute of Technology, under the condition of war, experienced more than five months of fleeing and wandering, self-reliance, overcoming all difficulties, held the opening ceremony at the temporary school site in Xiangtan, Hunan Province, resumed classes, and continued the string songs.

As Dean Mao Yisheng has not yet arrived at the school, alumnus Pei Yixiang, deputy director of Hunan-Guizhou Railway Bureau, took the post of interim dean and presided over the opening ceremony. The teachers and students were very excited, and the slogan "Long live the spirit of Tangyuan" spread all over the school buildings in Xiangtan. The students made a big slogan: "The seniors love the school so much, and the school does not die for a reason."

In February, 1938, Li Zhaohuan, president of Jiaotong University, called and hired Professor Luo Zhongchen as the dean of Tangyuan. In the absence of Professor Luo, he urged Mao Yisheng alumni to act as the dean. Mao Yisheng took office in Xiangtan on February 11th, and was warmly welcomed by teachers and students. They posted a big slogan "Welcome Dr. Mao to revive Jiaotong University". Everyone has more confidence in the future of the school. When Mao Yisheng reviewed his life in his later years, he mentioned three things: he was satisfied that students liked to listen to his classes; He appreciated the rapid construction method of "going up and down in one go" initiated when building Qiantang River Bridge. He will never forget the hardships of restoring the Tang Academy in the Anti-Japanese War. The third one refers to the restoration of Tangshan Institute of Technology in Xiangtan and the relocation to Pingyue.

At the beginning of the resumption of classes, many teachers were still stranded in Tangshan, Shanghai and other places, so it was difficult for teachers to arrive at all places for a while, and the shortage of teachers became a problem again. Alumni stepped forward. Alumni such as Wang Junli, Wang Juqian, Li Wenping, Wang Shizhen, Xue Zhaoshu and Huang Shouyi, as well as enthusiasts such as Li Zhongmei, Wu Rukang, Yu Yude, Tang Min and Xu Gongmao who are not alumni but care about Tangyuan, all came to teach at the school. During this period, Dean Mao Yisheng played an important role and quickly dealt with the problems of hiring teachers. In the case of very difficult conditions, Tangyuan accepted the resumption of classes at the request of Jiaotong University, and set up the Railway Management Department under Tangyuan according to the order of the Ministry of Education. As the number of students increased after the Railway Management Department moved to Qianjia Lane, Mao Yisheng was busy moving the school to Yangjiatan, Xiangxiang, dozens of kilometers away from Qianjia Lane. Commercial loans were made to the senior students of the Department of Mining and Metallurgy in Hunan University, and they went to Hankou for funding.

At the end of May, Luo Zhongchen, Wu Jinghu, Bei Furu and other professors who were stranded in Tangshan all arrived in Xiangtan. Because Professor Luo insisted on resigning, the Ministry of Education hired Mao Yisheng as the dean of Tangshan Institute of Technology of Jiaotong University.
