Librarian Dream Statement

1． The library is an open knowledge and information center, with public welfare service as the basic principle and readers as the starting point of all work.

2． The library provides equal services to all readers. Libraries, especially public libraries, have the responsibility to realize and protect citizens' basic reading rights, and maintain citizens' rights to enjoy library services by providing equal services to all members of society.

3． The library takes building a learning society as its own responsibility. Libraries are schools without walls for citizens’ lifelong learning, creating opportunities and conditions for citizens’ lifelong learning.

4. Libraries respond to the challenges of the times with service innovation. The library makes full use of modern information technology, especially digital library technology, to provide readers with high-quality, efficient and professional knowledge and information services.

5． The library carries out the construction and sharing of literature and information resources. Coordination and collaboration among various types of libraries should be strengthened to support open access and reduce the cost of information acquisition for the whole society.

6． The library embodies humanistic care in its services. The library provides humanized and convenient services, is committed to eliminating the difficulties for the public to use the library, and guarantees the rights of disadvantaged groups in society to obtain library services.

7. Librarians sincerely cooperate with all organizations and individuals who care about librarianship. The library encourages all sectors of society to promote the development of China's librarianship through investment, donations, media publicity, volunteer activities, etc.

The library is the door to knowledge. It realizes the social function of disseminating knowledge and inheriting civilization through the systematic collection, preservation and organization of documentary information.

The phrase "library is the gateway to knowledge" comes from the title of the first section of the "Public Library Manifesto": A gateway to knowledge (Another translation: The library is the way to knowledge) . This "Declaration" begins with this, indicating that it is consistent with the basic concepts of UNESCO/IFLA's "Declaration on Public Libraries" and other "Declarations".

"IFLA Internet Statement": "Libraries and information service institutions provide people with basic methods, guidance and help to access the Internet, and they are also the door to knowledge and information."

Chinese librarians should agree with IFLA’s core value system.

The work that libraries are engaged in is mainly to systematically collect, preserve and organize documentary information. The general social purpose or social value of this kind of work is:

Promote the horizontal development of documentary information Transfer: Spread knowledge. Effectively transmit the collected, saved and organized information in society to promote the dissemination of knowledge.

Promote the vertical transmission of documentary information: inherit civilization. Permanently preserve human cultural heritage so that human wisdom and civilization can be passed on from generation to generation.
