He has successively held official positions such as vanguard, garrison, guerrilla, staff general, and commander-in-chief. In the first year of Tongzhi (1862), he participated in the suppression of the Yunnan peasant uprising led by Du Wenxiu. Due to his outstanding military exploits, he was promoted to land admiral. He was a member of Cen Yuying's unit of the Qing army. In 1877, he founded "Cangjiang Academy" in his hometown Yingpan Town. During the Sino-French War (1884-1885 AD), Yang Yuke, who was appointed as the admiral of the General Military Administration of Gaozhou Town, Guangdong, was ordered to lead the third battalion of the Guangwu Army out of Zhennanguan (today's Friendship Pass) to resist the French. He guarded Guanyin Bridge in Lang Son Prefecture, set up three ambushes, and severely attacked the French army. He won every battle and made the French army frightened. Later, Pan Dingxin, the governor of Guangxi, the commander-in-chief of the Qing army's western front, abandoned Langshan and fled back to Zhennan Pass. Yang Yuke was fighting outside the customs. He lost his backup and was heavily surrounded by the enemy. He still did not flinch and killed the enemy bravely. In the end, he was shot and killed. The Qing court posthumously awarded him the title of "Prince Shaobao" and his posthumous title of "Wu Min". Yang Yuke once donated money to build the first school - "Cangjiang Academy" on the bank of the Lancang River in remote Lanping County, and hired teachers from the mainland to allow local students to receive cultural education for free.
