Introduction to the TV series "The Rebel"

The TV series "Rebels" mainly tells the story of Lin Nansheng, Zhu Yizhen and others, under the guidance of Communist Party members of China, who adhere to their ideals, find the right path to save the country, and complete the transformation and growth of their faith.

In 1936, Lin Nansheng, a young student in the special training class of the Fuxing Society, was taken to Shanghai by Chen Moqun, the head of the Shanghai District of the Fuxing Society's Secret Service, to participate in the task of arresting the underground party lurking in the Fuxing Society.

In the process of carrying out the mission, the upright and simple Lin Nansheng was constantly inspired by the sense of mission and fearless sacrifice of Communists such as Gu Shenyan, Ji Zhongyuan, Zhu Yizhen, Zuo Qiuming, etc. for the country and the people. I have a deeper reflection on the chaos within the Kuomintang and the suffering of the Chinese people at that time, and I also have a deeper understanding of the beliefs and pursuits of the Communists.

Lin Nansheng was brave and resolute in the fight against the Japanese and puppets, and made many military exploits. In the face of national justice, he stood together with the Communists many times. Especially at some critical moments, he used his special status in the military command to provide great help to the Shanghai underground party organization.

After hard struggle and the test of life and death, Lin Nansheng grew into a true Communist Party member and made outstanding contributions to the party and the country at the critical moment of the Liberation War.

Creative background

In 2018, Zhou You saw "The Rebel" for the first time by Yu Yu, the winner of the "People's Literature Award", and was attracted by it. Although it has only 40,000 to 50,000 words, the novel contains a large amount of information and the story is full of tension.

It contains many historical events, spans a large area and time, and has a relatively large space for exploration. Zhou You said that the forbearing and cold temperament of the whole story moved him and gave him the urge to create.

The script of "Rebel" was finalized and took 8 years to complete. When Zhou You took over, screenwriters Li Xiaoming, Qin Wen, and Chen Ting already had a draft of the script. On this basis, Zhou You, the drama's historical consultant Guan Jingfeng, screenwriters Li Ruqiao and Zhang Bin, and script coordinator Wang Juanli spent two years sorting out, adjusting and rewriting the script in detail.

Before each stage of the script was finalized, the creative team led by Zhou You had to overturn it three or four times and polish it repeatedly. The final shooting script had four to five million words. In order to be more realistic, in two years, the creative team led by Zhou You implemented all aspects of the script into the script. At this stage, the working manuscript alone has more than 100,000 words.

The song "Ballad of the Great Wall" chosen for the victory of the Anti-Japanese War in the play, and the "June Barcarolle" that represents the overall temperament of the play have been determined at this stage.
