At that time, he returned to Taiwan to visit his relatives. After returning to the United States, he excitedly told me: He found a treasure! ——He found a great practitioner! He said: He is very popular in Taiwan, especially among young people studying Buddhism in universities. He is very popular. He said that that person founded "×× Zen" and that he had achieved the first stage of Sotapanna. He also said that he could teach and train others in a short period of time, making them enlightened and achieve Sotapanna ( First Fruition); I heard that he has "certified" several "disciples" who have achieved First Fruition (these people are also lay people). When I heard this, I secretly predicted in my heart that this "great practitioner" would soon reach the second, third, or even fourth fruition. Sure enough, unfortunately I had expected it. Not long after, I heard that this person was rising up one after another, and finally climbed to the fourth fruit. Time flies, more than ten years later, I heard that a famous professor in the Buddhist world visited him and asked him: "I heard that you have achieved the results of sealing for your disciples - saying that they have achieved the first, second, and third fruits. "Four effects, etc., is there such a thing?" He replied: "I am talking about the effect within the cause." It’s actually a cunning statement! ("Telling the effect from the cause" means: Although they only have the "cause" in their minds, the effect will definitely be achieved in the future; because I see the cause and know the effect, I tell the effect in advance, that's all.) Asked: "I heard that you claim to have attained Arhatship. Is this true?" He replied: "Not to mention the past, I consider myself a practitioner of the Dharma-eye Pure Bodhisattva path." Look! It has changed again, I dare not admit it! (Why didn't you dare to admit it? Because the person who visited him was an expert, a famous university professor, and almost his teacher in Buddhism - he had learned Buddhism from him; so he knew that this was a fool's errand, so he changed his story .) The above examples are considered good; more often, some people call themselves Buddha, Living Buddha, Guru, Supreme Master, Vajra Master, Dharma King, and even say that they are that Buddha or Bodhisattva. The second coming, or the incarnation of a certain Buddha or Bodhisattva. But in the troubled world, all living beings are often ignorant and blind, believing and accepting without doubt. It is a big lie to say that you are enlightened before you have realized it. Even if you say that you are the "incarnation" of such and such Bodhisattva, the incarnation of such and such Buddha, or the "return", it is also a big lie. Therefore, it is said in the Precepts Sutra: Not only can I not tell myself, but I can even ask others: "Master, I heard that you have achieved the three fruits (or have transcended the three realms, or have "freedom of life and death", or have ascended to the eighth level, or have supernatural powers). ), is that so?" Even if you don't answer affirmatively and clearly: "Yes," you can just nod (nod), smile, remain silent (default), or blink to make the other party "yes." Replying in the affirmative to "understand", or replying in the affirmative with the intention of causing the other party to "misunderstand" is a violation of the precept of lying! To put it further, it would be a crime to even deny this issue without knowing it on the spot. Even if you hear rumors and discussions from your disciples ("I heard that our master has other minds."), if the teacher hears this in the audience and does not deny and stop such rumors, he is committing a crime. Furthermore, not only is it a crime not to deny it when others suspect that one has attained sainthood, one cannot even casually say that someone has attained enlightenment, or rashly conclude that someone is the "return of the great Bodhisattva" or that someone is Manjushri. The incarnation of Guanyin, the incarnation of Guanyin, etc.; even if you hear these rumors, you must not spread them to others, otherwise it will be false rumors! Someone once publicly announced during a lecture that his teacher (an old layman in his eighties) was "already at ease with life and death" and would definitely live to be over ninety years old. Unfortunately, the old gentleman passed away soon. As a disciple of Buddhism, you should not casually declare that others have any achievements (including "freedom of life and death") - even if you are talking about others, you are committing a big lie! Since you can know and see that others are "at ease with life and death," what does this mean? This implies that only if your practice is higher than his, or at least as high as his, can you know the state of his cultivation. Therefore, when you "praise him", you are "praising yourself" at the same time, so there are two major lies in this: one is falsely stating what others have testified, and the other is implying what one has testified - don't be afraid! Furthermore, why can’t the teachings of the Tathagata be said even if they are truly the incarnations of Bodhisattvas, Arhats, etc.? Why? Because if you say it, there will be several consequences. 1. All living beings come to worship and make offerings, so it is easy for work to be related to fame and fortune.2. If you are the incarnation of a true Bodhisattva, and someone or a heretic does not believe you or is jealous, and says that you are a fake, or even that you are the incarnation of a demon, wouldn't that make him commit a serious crime? 3. If you are a true Bodhisattva and you preach like this, but others want to lie and claim that they are also a true Bodhisattva, how can you stop them from speaking? How can you tell the difference between authenticity and authenticity? Therefore, once this example is opened, it is endless. Therefore, in order to prevent this disadvantage, the Buddha’s teachings must not be leaked. This is why: "If you vent, you will not live in the world, and if you live in the world, you cannot vent." To put it more accurately, we can know this iron rule: "The truth is not spoken, and the truth is not spoken." Based on this, we can also see that a certain sect brazenly claims that if its leaders are not Manjushri and Samantabhadra, they are the incarnations of Amitabha, Guanyin, etc.; there is even a sect that claims to the outside world that both of its disciples have become Buddhas, and crowns their names with "Buddha" Another sect claims that dozens of people in its sect have achieved the status of Bodhisattva above the first level. All of these are very problematic according to orthodox teachings. Wise men please ask for details. The four paranas of sexual immorality, killing, theft, and delusion are the causes of the occurrence of all great demonic things. If the cause is eliminated, the result will not arise. If the "four clear teachings" are respected and maintained intact, the cause of the demonic things will be eliminated and the demonic things will be silent forever. On the other hand, if you do not uphold the four clear teachings and practice the four renunciations (the Four Parasities) in vain, but claim that you are cultivating and practicing Zen, or even want to be enlightened and see your nature, and want to be free from demons, then you will be like a tree trying to catch a fish.
