The computer still can't talk when plugged into the microphone.

The reason why the computer still can't talk when the microphone is plugged in: the microphone is disabled.

1. Click "Start" on the computer and select "Control Panel".

2. Click Hardware and Sound.

4. Select "Recording" in the pop-up window, and then check whether the microphone is disabled.

5. Then right-click the microphone and select Enable.

Sound is a wonderful thing. All the different sounds we hear are caused by a slight pressure difference in the air around us. Surprisingly, air can spread these pressure differences so well and so truly for a long distance.

The microphone is connected to the needle through the metal diaphragm, and the needle draws a pattern on the metal foil. When you speak into the diaphragm, the pressure difference makes the diaphragm move, which makes the needle move. The movement of the needle is recorded on the metal foil.

Then when you run the needle back on the metal foil, the vibration caused by scraping on the metal foil will make the diaphragm move and reproduce the sound. This purely mechanical system shows how much energy can be generated by vibration in the air.
