The Ningxia section of the Yellow River was closed ahead of schedule. Do you know why?

Ice flood, commonly known as ice platoon, is a hydrological phenomenon that the river water level rises obviously due to the resistance of ice to water flow. Ice sometimes converges into an integrated ice plug or dam, which leads to a sharp rise in water level and eventually floods the beach or bursts its banks. This is the so-called Hong Ling. Ice flood may occur during the interception period in winter and the river opening period in spring.

In the alpine region, the river flows from low latitude to high latitude, and the shape of the river channel is wide and narrow, so there are more opportunities for serious ice flood where the river channel bends into a ring. This is because the lower section of the river freezes earlier than the upper section, and the upper section thaws earlier than the lower section.

When ice appears in the lower reaches of the river, it blocks some upstream water and increases the water storage capacity of the river. When the ice melts and opens the river, more and more ice water gathers along the river, and the ice peak increases day by day. When encountering a narrow reach or a bend in a river, ice will get stuck and form an ice dam, thus increasing the upstream water level.

If there is serious ice or ice dam in the river, the water level will rise sharply and cause serious floods. The Yellow River flows downstream from the mountains of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and under the different geographical structures of rivers and regions, it has formed a dangerous situation. The Yellow River ice is more important in Ningmeng. Ningxia is located in the upper reaches of the Yellow River, and the whole territory belongs to the Yellow River basin, while Ningxia was born and prospered because of the Yellow River. It is the mother river of Ningxia, nourishing the descendants of Ningxia and living and working in peace and contentment from generation to generation. Therefore, we should do a good job in flood control and take care of the mother river.
