According to legend, in the fourth year of Xian Tong, Tang Xianzong (AD 863), Hua Hui, a monk, invited Guanyin to return home from Wutai Mountain, but was blocked by the Lotus Sea on Putuo Mountain, thinking that Guanyin refused to cross eastward and had to land in Yin Chao Cave, leaving the Buddha statue as his residence. Since then, the Guanyin Dojo has begun. Post-Buddhism flourished with the reputation of "the first Buddhist country in Sinian".

Every year on February 19, Guanyin's birthday, June 19, Guanyin Daoism Day, September 19, Guanyin's becoming a monk day, believers from all directions gather in the Buddhist country, and Putuo Mountain is full of lights and cigarettes. Chanting scriptures and worshipping Buddha, staying up all night, its grand occasion is breathtaking. Every time there is a Buddhist event, there are many auspicious signs, and believers ask for worship, and their effects frequently appear. Buddhist activities that have lasted for more than 1000 years have accumulated profound Buddhist culture in Putuo Mountain, a beautiful pure land in Zhong Ling. Master avalokitesvara is attached to the whole world, and there is a saying that "everyone is Amitabha and every household is avalokitesvara". Guanyin belief is called "the belief of half the world" by scholars.

Due to the rendering of religious myths, every grass, tree, stone and hole on Mount Putuo is covered with the coat of "Guanyin miracle". Temple buildings on the island have been built, rebuilt and expanded since the Tang and Song Dynasties, forming a system of "Haitian Buddha Country" centered on three Buddhist temples: Puji, Fayu and Huiji. In its heyday, there were more than 200 large and small temple buildings and more than 2,000 monks and nuns on the island.
