I cough whenever I catch a cold. Why is this?

Cough is a protective reflex action of human body. Pathological secretions in the respiratory tract and foreign bodies entering the respiratory tract can be excreted by cough reflex.

1. Respiratory diseases

Inhalation of irritant gases in various parts of respiratory tract such as pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchus and lung, stimulation of foreign body, inflammation, tumor and bleeding can all cause cough.

2. Pleural diseases

When pleurisy or pleura is stimulated (such as spontaneous pneumothorax), it can cause cough.

3. Heart disease

For example, pulmonary congestion and pulmonary edema caused by mitral stenosis or left ventricular dysfunction caused by other reasons can cause cough. Cough and hemoptysis can also occur when the embolus of the right heart or systemic vein falls off and causes pulmonary embolism.

4. Central factors

Cough can also originate from the cerebral cortex (spontaneous cough), when the impulse spreads from the cerebral cortex to the cough center of the medulla oblongata, it causes cough.
