The difference between hope and wish

The difference and usage between hope and wish:

Difference 1:

hope expresses something that can be realized with certainty or confidence, followed by a verb infinitive or an object clause directly, not an infinitive with a gerund or an object complement.

wish expresses something that is unlikely to be realized, followed by a noun, an object clause (past tense) or an infinitive as an object complement.

For example:

We all hope to see him very soon.

we all hope to see him as soon as possible.

I hope it will be fine tomorrow so that we can go out。

I hope it will be fine tomorrow, so that we can go out.

How I wish it was not raining at the moment! How I wish it weren't raining at the moment! (In fact, it is raining)

Difference 2:

Both wish and hope can take the clause led by that, but the predicate verb of the clause after wish should use the subjunctive mood (the verb is in the past tense or the past perfect tense).

hope uses the required tense.

usage:

1.I hope that he will win the game.

I hope he will win the game.

2.I wish that I knew the answer。

I wish I knew the answer.

Difference 3:

hope can be used with so or not to replace an object clause with positive and negative meanings respectively to avoid repetition, but wish can't.

Will it be fine tomorrow?

will it be fine tomorrow?

I hope so。

I hope so.

Will it rain tomorrow?

will it rain tomorrow?

I hope not。

I hope not.
