Methods and steps of dog sterilization

We will tell you the process of dog sterilization.

1, wash the dog and get ready to go.

Dog sterilization requires general anesthesia and inhalation (gas) anesthesia. Pet doctors often give patients intravenous infusion, monitor heart rate and respiratory rate, blood pressure and blood oxygen saturation during operation, and give patients drugs to control pain. Male dog ligation is aseptic operation, which means that all precautions should be taken to keep the operation area as clean as possible.

After the dog is anesthetized, the pet nurse or pet doctor will scrape off the operation area and scrub it with skin cleaner. Scrubbing starts from the incision area and is carried out in the form of circular motion, which becomes wider with the increase of each circle, so as to ensure that the incision area is as clean as possible. The incision of dog sterilization is in front of testis and scrotum, because scrotum tissue is very thin and sensitive, and it bleeds more than skin incision.

Step 2 cut off the dog's skin

The incision is in the skin, just in front of the scrotum. Each testicle is pushed up through this incision.

There are two methods for dog sterilization: open or closed sterilization. There is no right or wrong method of sterilization, which is usually evaluated and selected by the surgeon who performs the operation according to the dog's condition. In the case of open castration, the tough membrane covering of testis and related structures is cut. Each structure is connected (ligated) separately. In the case of closed castration, the capsule is not cut, and the blood vessels, vas deferens and related structures are ligated at the same time. Usually, two or three separate knots are used to prevent bleeding.

3. Take out the dog's testicles.

When the surgeon clamps the vas deferens, the parapolar plexus (blood vessels around the vas deferens), the levator testis and the arterial supply. Next, soluble sutures, usually synthetic monofilaments, are used for internal ligation around blood vessels, vas deferens and cremaster muscles.

4. Ligate the dog's blood vessels

Gently put a needle between the vas deferens and blood vessels, and then wrap stitches around everything to fix the knot. This penetrating ligation or suture will help to keep the dog's wound in place to prevent blood vessel bleeding or leakage.

5, processing incision

Suture the skin with the same soluble suture as testicular ligation. The incision is usually small, and the suture is carried out in two or three steps. The first layer closes the skin edges together, and the second layer closes the skin, so that no suture can be seen (or licked) on the outer surface of the skin. Some pet doctors also use surgical glue for tertiary suture. Surgical glue "seals" the skin edges together to reduce bleeding and achieve maximum comfort, which helps to prevent any slight leakage of the incision.

If insoluble suture is used, it needs to be removed within 10 to 14 days. In the case of very active dogs or dogs known to lick, steel wire suture is sometimes used, which will increase strength and prevent dogs from licking, which also needs to be removed within 10 to 14 days.

6. Dog sterilization is completed

The sterilization of the dog was basically completed, and then the dog woke up from anesthesia.

7. The dog is ready to wake up

If the dog's incision is small, it will heal well. In the recovery period, the dog must keep quiet and don't lick the surgical wound to get the fastest healing. The scrotum will shrink over time and slowly disappear. Older dogs, especially those castrated for more than 6 months, may leave empty "capsules".

Unless there is diseased tissue, scrotal tissue will not be removed under normal circumstances. This is because scrotum tissue is sensitive and bleeding is more than skin. Whether it really needs to be removed, you have to discuss with your pet doctor.
