■Quiz on the pronunciation of the surname Sui
In the Zhenjiang area, there are many people with the surname Sui, distributed in Zhenjiang City and Danyang City. Although the two places do not belong to the same dialect area, there are many people with the surname Sui. Almost no one is willing to call them Mr. Sui or Comrade Sui. They claimed that their surname was Xu, and they also said that it was not "Yanwu Xu" but "Muguixu", and the surrounding people had to change their words. The Sui family has preserved the ancient music from generation to generation. Another example is the surname Yi, which is found in several counties and cities in Jiangsu. There is Yichi in Chenwu, Jurong City. People with the surname Yi there are called "Nai" according to the dictionary. Changsong Bozhuang in Jiangdu City in the north of the Yangtze River is an ancient village with a history of more than 1,000 years. People surnamed there call themselves "Ni", saying that their ancestors migrated from Suzhou in the south of the Yangtze River. In Suzhou dialect, "ear" is pronounced as ni. duo. Later, I met another official named Yi. He didn’t want others to call him Director Nai and called himself Mi. I heard that Chen Rong, the writer of "Middle Age", emphasized that his name is "Shen Rong" on many occasions. The people with the surname Chen in Nanxiang, Zhenjiang, are originally from Henan. He also calls himself "Shen". Chen is notated as Chen in "Xinhua Dictionary"
Check the Song version of "Guangyun" and the word "筭" has the following pronunciation:
Five flat tones:
Xu Guiqie, Suixu Jianhao.
The surname is Qie. Leave Zhaojun.
Pingsheng Liuzhi:
Xu Weiqie, Suixu Jianxuan.
Twelve voices sounded in unison:
Hu Guiqie, his eyes were deep and evil.
In addition, according to "Huainanzi Yuan Dao Xun": "Suiran can see, ■ran can hear." (■, upper and lower eyes, reading camp). Han Gao's note: "Sui reads "Gui".
According to the above records, there are five historical pronunciations of the word "筭". According to the classification of ancient phoneticians, the finals of these pronunciations were all in the fourth grade of Zhibu Hekou in ancient times. According to Mr. Wang Li's estimation, with the intermediary sound of Hekouhu, the finals can be proposed as [ue]. The medieval second-class rhyme of Zhizhi is a third-class rhyme. Phonologists generally believe that the phonetic characteristic of the third-class rhyme is the intermediary sound [j]. The medial sound [j] is produced during the development process of Yu sound and is a later phonetic feature. The production of this medial sound may be caused by the evolution of the initial consonant. The American sinologist Pu Liben noticed in the book "The Consonant System of Ancient Chinese" that the palatalization of the guttural sound will produce the medial sound [j]. Among the four pronunciations recorded in "Guangyun", the ancient initial consonant of "Huguiqie" is Xia Niu, which is a guttural sound. "Xu Guiqie" and "Xu Weiqie" are Xiaonuo, the root sound of the tongue. The high-yielding sound Gui belongs to Jian Nü and is also the sound of the root of the tongue. Judging from the law of sound changes, it is natural for a guttural sound to develop into a lingual sound. The anteriorization of the box button leads to the production of medial sound. This can be reflected by the different pronunciations of some characters, such as "Xu Guiqie" among the nine characters (actually seven characters), Sui, Jin, and Qin, and also read "Hu Guiqie". Most of the characters in these two have the same homophonic radicals. This is not an accidental phenomenon. It should be said that the major character pronunciation of "Xu Guiqie" comes from "Hu Guiqie". The rhymes of "Xu Weiqie" and "Xu Guiqie" are only slightly different in the rhyme ending.
What is more difficult to explain is the origin of "interest is cut". Let’s put this question aside for now and let’s talk about the pronunciation of the surname “Sui” in dialect. In areas with a high concentration of Sui surnames, such as Zhenjiang and Danyang in Jiangsu, they are generally pronounced as "Xu". If this sound comes from the medieval sound "breath to cut", then it means that the heart button, which is a tip of the tongue fricative, has become a tongue-leaf fricative. There is no reason for this change in Zhenjiang dialect, which has the same opposition between tongue tip fricatives and tongue leaf fricatives as Beijing dialect. On the contrary, the sound at the base of the tongue changes into the fricative sound at the tip of the tongue, which is a very common phenomenon in northern dialects. Therefore, I guess that the pronunciation of the character Sui in Jiangsu does not come from "Xiweiqie", but precisely from "Xu Guiqie". The medieval pronunciation is intended to be [hjue]. Due to the role of the medial consonant [j], the final consonant is further elevated until it is finally lost. At the same time, the initial consonant also begins to transition from a tip fricative to a tongue-leaf fricative. At this time, the rounded medial consonant [u] is strengthened and finally becomes the final consonant. . Speaking of "breathing is Qie", what is puzzling is that this fanqie is the only word in "Guangyun". "Guangyun" was originally written in "Qieyun" written by Lu Fayan in the late Sui Dynasty. The pronunciations recorded in it have all been reviewed by Xiao Gai and Yan Zhitui, and their fallacies cannot be immediately determined.
I personally speculate that in the dialects of the northern areas where the surname Sui was concentrated at that time, the pronunciation of the character Sui may have begun to evolve into a lingual fricative. According to the Qieyun language system, there is no position for the tongue-leaf fricative, so Xiao, Yan and others included this word in the heart connection with similar pronunciation. Lu Fayan's "Preface to Qie Yun" says: "Yan and Zhao suffered many injuries and turbidity." According to this, it can be deduced that the voiced sound of Chinese in the Yanzhao area may have shown a weakening trend in the late Sui and early Tang Dynasties, and the Sui character in "Huguiqie" is exactly this type of voiced character, and the Yanzhao area has also been in use since the Northern Dynasties. The place where the surname is prosperous.
Regarding the origin of "interest is cut", another hypothesis can be made. That is, we assume that the initial consonant of the ancient sound in Sui is in the form of s + guttural sound. Due to the loss of the prefix s, the guttural sound is transformed into a root sound, which may also cause changes in tone, such as the appearance of the voiceless "gui" sound. Most surnames can preserve ancient sounds, so what is lost is not the prefix, but the guttural initial consonant. Because there are so few homophones, it is very difficult to prove this hypothesis.
Whether the surname Sui comes from Bai Di, it seems difficult to find confirmation from handed down documents. However, there has always been an indissoluble bond between the activities of the Sui family and the place where the Baidi people prospered and multiplied. The surname Sui was expected to be called Zhao County, but it was actually the generation of Gaoyi and Zhao County in present-day Hebei Province. This is exactly the territory of the Xianyu Kingdom and the Zhongshan Kingdom in the Pre-Qin Dynasty. According to "Zuo Zhuan", Fei and Gu are both affiliated with Xianyu, and they are also different species of Baidi. The so-called different species, I think, refers to the Bai Di who lived in the Xihe area. The Bai Di in this area mainly came into contact with the Qin State, so most of the ancestors of the surname Wei in later generations came from Yongzhou. It can be seen that the Di ethnic group is very widely distributed in northern China, with many tribes that do not belong to each other. Within the Di ethnic group, there are not only Red Di and Bai Di, but also various surnames such as Ji and Wei. According to oral tradition, the surname Sui comes from the descendants of Feizi Kingdom, but the surname with the character Fei is missing from the literature. Considering that the Feizi Kingdom is a vassal state of Xianyu, although they are both from the Baidi species, their surnames may be different. Xianyu, according to historical records, was a person with the surname Ji in Di. Then, Feiziguo may be presumed to have the surname of Wei. During the Spring and Autumn Period, the Di and Xia nationalities conquered each other, but they also intermarried with each other. "Zuo Zhuan Xi Twenty-Three Years": "The Di people attacked Yao Jiuru and got their second daughter, Shu Wei Ji Wei." According to Yang Bojun's annotation, the Wei family was ashamed of being a daughter in bronze and inscriptions. The two characters "Guan Sui" and "Kui" are both pronounced in the same tone, and are divided into the harmonic sounds of "Gui" and "Ghost". They are both pronounced in the same tone and have tongue root sounds. In ancient times, they were divided into different rhymes, and may be interoperable. Therefore, the speculation that the surname Sui was derived from the surname Wei cannot be said to be groundless.
But why must the surname Wei be changed to Sui? Check "Guangyun", Qiyun Huguiqie, and four other surnames with the same pronunciation as Sui. These four surnames are very rare, but without exception, Gui is the most famous one. Except for one character, which refers to the fourth son of Liang, the origin of the others is not stated. Based on this, it may be speculated that the descendants of the Feizi Kingdom may have changed their surnames just by taking the words randomly. However, if we look for meaning based on the sound, we may be able to draw some more interesting inferences.
"Shuowen" says: "Chidi is a dog breed. It also saves the sound of dogs." Therefore, the Di people should have a certain origin relationship with the Quanrong, Quanyi, etc. in historical records. The white dogs and white dogs in Quanrong are not necessarily named because of their whiteness. One possible reason is because of their fair skin color. There are people with the surname of Wei among the Di people. "Yupian" says: "Kai, Gao Ye", which may refer to tall body. "Ghost Department" in "Shuowen" means "like a ghost head", which also refers to facial features. "Guangyun": "Sui, deep eyes and evil eyes" may refer to deep eyes. Mr. Yu Taishan, in "New Examination of Ancient Tribes", discovered that the legend of the Lu Zhong clan marrying the ghost Fang clan in the "Dadai Liji" has the characteristics of Indo-European mythology. According to the names of people and places in the existing classics, the Di people once had their own unique language and culture, but later the non-contiguous parts merged with the Chinese people and other ethnic groups at different historical stages.

Qilu inscribed on Mr. Fengming's "Historical Textual Research of the Sui Family"
The tombs in the tomb are obscure and heavy, but the wild words seek truth and are profound.
Looking for the origin of ancient tribes in Baidi, it is said that the ancestors valued gold.
The beacons on the two rivers compete for supremacy, and the broken willow insects push the emperor's heart.
Immigrants are all over China today, and they are stunned by the sound of qin cao in the distance.
Self-note:
(1) Wild sentences: If etiquette is lost, seek help from others. Due to the lack of handed down documents, certain historical facts must resort to folk oral legends in a discerning manner. This is a general rule of sociological research. Mr. Fengming verified the origin relationship between the Sui family and the Baidi people from the folk legend of Feizi Kingdom in Xiyang County, Shanxi Province, which is consistent with this general principle.
(2) Two Rivers Sentence: The Xianyu Kingdom in the Spring and Autumn Period, called the Zhongshan Kingdom during the Warring States Period, was built by the Baidi people and competed with the Chinese states for hundreds of years. The two rivers are the Nanhe River and the Donghe River. The Nanhe River It is the ancient course of the Yellow River, and the East River is at the boundary of the present Qin and Jin provinces. This area is roughly the central part of present-day Hebei Province.
(3) Broken Willow Sentences: "Hanshu Volume 75, Sui Liang Xia Hou Jingyi Li Zhuan 45" contains: "At that time, a dead tree in Changyi came back to life, and went up to Linyuan. A medium-sized willow tree is broken and lying on the ground, but it is also growing on its own. There are insects eating leaves and writing it into words, saying, "Gongsun Bing has been established." The image of Mount Tai is the peak of Daizong. The king has changed his surname. Now the big stone stands on its own and the dead willows rise again. It is not the work of human beings. There should be someone who is the son of the emperor. Therefore, the abandoned house has been resurrected. The Gongsun family should be revived. ' (Sui) Meng Yi also didn't know where he was, so he said: 'The former teacher Dong Zhongshu said that even if there is a successor to the emperor, it will not harm the emperor Yao of the Han Dynasty. The fate of the country. Who should the Emperor of the Han Dynasty send to the world to seek out virtuous people, and then retreat to Baili and claim the title of Queen of the Yin Dynasty on Tuesday, in order to obey the destiny? /p>
There are many historical records about the origin of the Sui surname, and there are different opinions in folk oral legends, many of which have regional characteristics. What Sui Xiliang, a native of Dongyetou Township, Xiyang County, Shanxi Province, said is different from what an elder from the same town said, the late Mr. Fengming, the author of "Historical Textual Research of the Sui Family", so I record it as follows for the purpose of further research in my spare time. .
There are many people with the surname Sui in Dongyetou Township, Xiyang County, Shanxi Province. In my hometown, the word "sui" is pronounced the same as in the dictionary. Legend has it that during the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, there was a small dynasty called the "Gui (pronounced gui) Dynasty". For some reason, all the families were ordered to be executed. Many people knelt by the river. The law enforcement officer asked who was named "Gui". A wise man looked at the river and gained wisdom and said: The surname is "sui" because people in Xiyang, Shanxi Province pronounce "shui" as "sui". To look at water, add an eye in front of the word "Gui", and to look at water, take the sound "sui". Many people avoided disaster by following this. According to local elders, there is still a ruin in Dongyetou Township, called "Diangetai", which is the site of the ancient palace of the "Gui Dynasty". It is said that there are also stone tablets unearthed, but there is no research to verify whether it is accurate. It can also be regarded as a theory of the origin of "Sui". It is estimated that the Sui family is a minority in the north. Because there is a local custom of eating "mian Yang" on July 15th. It is said that Yang Liulang of the Song Dynasty swept the north and massacred many people wherever he went. Therefore, the locals were very ruthless to the Yang family and used Make the white flour into the shape of a human being, steam it and eat it. This legend and custom is different from the traditional Chinese attitude of praise for the Yang family. I am afraid there is a reason for it. Most of the people Yang Liulang massacred were northern ethnic groups, so it is reasonable to infer that the Sui family came from the north.
■The origin of the surname Sui
The surname Sui is not recorded in the Song version of "One Hundred Family Surnames", but it has been a surname for a long time. According to the "Compilation of Yuanhe Surnames": "Sui, Doctor Zhao ate and collected food from Sui Yi, so he took it as his surname." There is another theory that during the Warring States Period, the king of Feizi Kingdom (east of Taiyuan, Shanxi Province) was named Gui. His descendants changed their surname to Sui because they were afraid of being invaded and suppressed and affecting the whole clan. It can be seen that the Sui surname was formed as early as 2500 years ago.
Among the Sui clan, there was a couplet "The Ming Jing knew the number, but ordered to leave the country", which praised Sui Hong in the Han Dynasty, who was appointed as Yilang by Ming Jing. Sui Kuaiyi of the Northern Wei Dynasty issued an edict and secretly came out of seclusion to maintain his noble moral integrity.
The surname Sui in Danyang began in the Southern Tang Dynasty. According to the "Danyang County Chronicle" (Guangxu Edition), the first person with the surname Sui in Danyang (that is, the ancestor of Shiqian) was Sui Zhaofu, the governor of the Southern Tang Dynasty, with the courtesy name Longzu, and a native of Gaoyi, Zhaozhou (Gaoyi County, Hebei Province). He was a Jinshi of the Southern Tang Dynasty. He first moved to Jinling and served as the governor of Changzhou during the Baoda period. He is courageous, lenient and simple in his administration, and has remarkable achievements in governance. In the fifth year of Xiande of the later Zhou Dynasty (958), the central leader Li Jing proclaimed himself a vassal in Zhou Dynasty, and ordered Zhaofu to be the envoy of the Southern Tang Dynasty and to live in Daliang (Kaifeng City). After Li Yu succeeded to the throne, he repeatedly appointed Zhao Fu as the envoy to mediate between Jinling and Daliang. As a minister of the envoy, Sui Zhaofu fulfilled his duties loyally and was neither humble nor arrogant. The Zhou Dynasty offered him salary but did not accept it; the Song Dynasty offered him power and was not afraid. He always fulfilled his mission and was highly respected by the people in the north. After the fall of the Southern Tang Dynasty, he missed his homeland and was ashamed to be a minister of the Song Dynasty. He took his family down to Danyang and settled in Dongzhuang in the south of the city (east of Suixiang Village, Hengtang Town), where he founded the lineage of the Sui family in Danyang. Through long-term reproduction and development, he gradually became one of the famous families in the city. At present, the Sui clan has a large lineup in Danyang. There are as many as 8 villages named with the word "Sui" alone. There are even more villages without the word "Sui" that are actually inhabited by the Sui clan. They are mainly distributed in Hengtang, Yanling, Development Zone, Lizhuang, Lvcheng, Lingkou, Maixi, Erling and Yunyang towns.
In the sixth year of Jingtai in the Ming Dynasty (1455), the Sui family in Danyang revised the "Genealogy of the Sui family", and in the eleventh year of Yongzheng in the Qing Dynasty (1733), it was revised again.
For thousands of years, there have been many sages in the Sui clan. In the Han Dynasty, there was Fu Jie Ling Sui Hong, during the Three Kingdoms period there was Sui Gu, the leader of the peasant rebel army, and in the Northern Wei Dynasty, there was Sui Kua, the general of the Zhonglang family. The "Dictionary of Chinese Names" records 4 people with the same name, 2 of whom are from Danyang. "Jiangsu Art and Literature Zhenjiang Volume" records 8 people with the surname Sui, all of whom were born in Danyang. "Danyang County Chronicle" (Guangxu Edition) contains more than 40 Jinshi, Gongshi, and Juren surnamed Sui. In the Ming Dynasty, there were the household minister Wai Lang Sui Hong, the Hanlin Academy reviewer Sui Shi, the Wu Lu general Sui Xian, and the Wu Yi general Sui Gu; in the Qing Dynasty there were the supervisory censor Sui Chaodong, the painter Sui Shiting, etc. There used to be a large-scale Sui family ancestral hall in Yanzi Lane in Danyang City. There is a couplet hanging on the hall pillar: "The family in the Western Han Dynasty has a long history, and the Southern Tang Dynasty has a long history." Two figures who had great influence on the history of the Sui family: Fu Jieling in the Western Han Dynasty Sui Hong and Southern Tang Jinzou made Sui Zhaofu praise him.

■Historical Celebrities
Sui Hong: Official of the Han Dynasty, he was a student of Dong Zhongshu. After the fall of Qin, in the Han Dynasty, Confucian scholars actively advocated the abdication system based on the concept of respecting Confucius and restoring ancient times. According to the "Book of Han Sui Hong Biography", Sui Hong learned something about the induction of heaven and man, so he wrote to Emperor Zhao: "My teacher Dong Zhongshu Having said that, being an emperor must also pay attention to destiny. A person without destiny will not be able to sit on the throne even if he inherits the throne. There are magical scenes everywhere. It seems that there are ordinary people who want to be emperor. Although your position is legally inherited. Yes, but according to the vision, it seems that it is time to hand it over to someone else. I suggest you call the world to find a suitable person to replace you and give up the throne to him. As for you, just find a small place to retire. Isn't that good? " Emperor Zhao was young at that time, and Huo Guang, Huo Qubing's younger brother, was in charge of government affairs. Hearing this, he thought it was a good idea, so Suihong was killed by Huo Guang. The interesting part of this incident was not that Suihong was killed, but his Courage - He dared to ask the emperor to abdicate without even knowing who Gongsun was. This shows how much courage Chen Wei gave him. The Confucian scholars' strategy of direct abdication did not work, so they adopted alternative methods. "Book of Han: Records of Emperor Ai" contains Xia Heliang's prophecy of Chi ***, believing that the fate of the Han Dynasty had declined, and he should be ordered to do it again by Emperor Ai. Although this method was not abdication, it still had the flavor of abdication. Unfortunately, Emperor Ai came to his senses and knew that once the doctrine of re-appointment was implemented, abdication would be inevitable and the family and the world would be threatened, so he still killed Xia Heliang.
Sui Kua: A native of Gaoyi, Zhao County. His ancestor Sui Mai worked as an army advisor for the Jin Dynasty Sima Yue, and was later employed by Shi Le. He was promoted to the governor of Xuzhou; his father Sui Sui was an official at the end of the Later Yan Dynasty and was promoted to Zhongshu Ling. When Tuoba Gui attacked Later Yan, Suisui persuaded Murong Bao to build a wall and clear the country to resist the attack; Suisui boasted that he had married Julu Wei Pannu, "a famous person at that time", and "young and Situ Cui Hao were sworn friends." , the Sui family of Zhaojun certainly met the standard of "a virtuous and handsome man, crowned the state" set in the imperial edict for recruiting scholars. "Hao was a Situ, and he was summoned to serve as a lieutenant, but he refused to go because of his illness. The state and county forced him to send him, so he had no choice but to go to Kyoto. He met Hao and stayed for a few days, but drank and talked about his life, which was not as good as worldly affairs. Hao wanted to Regarding Qu Zhi, he was unable to speak. Seeing this, Empress Hao submitted an edict to Kua Huai and did not open her mouth. Later, Sui Kua asked the villagers to lose the rent, which was considered a chariot. …The laws of the dynasty were very strict at that time. If you praise someone privately, you will be blamed for the selfishness.
