The so-called "picking green" means that on the night of the Lantern Festival, women go out together and steal some vegetables from passing vegetable fields to cook at home.

"Picking green" is a folk custom. Every night on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month (Lantern Festival), we have to go out to "pick green" in other places. It is said that you can steal good luck for a year. The object of picking green is usually the crops in the field, but they all have meaning. Cantonese means wealth when picking vegetables, cleverness when picking onions, counting when picking garlic, and so on.

It is said to be a traditional custom in Leshan, Meishan, Yibin and Luzhou, Sichuan. It is a very happy thing for a family to go green picking in groups of three or five. Old people say that picking green can bring you a good year. The owner who is stolen will not be angry, because others steal their own vegetables, which shows that their vegetables are well planted, especially in modern times, people's material level is not low, and stealing green has become a feeling.

The Origin of the Lantern Festival Stealing Youth Day

From ancient times to the present, there have been four traditional customs in the Lantern Festival on the fifteenth day of the first month: eating Yuanxiao, traveling in all diseases, picking green flowers and enjoying Yuanxiao. There are many legends about the origin of stealing green. The most popular story originated from Meng Jiangnv. Meng Jiangnv trekked thousands of miles to find her husband. On the way to the Great Wall, she was too hungry. She stole vegetables from other people's vegetable fields.

Later, women sympathized with her misfortune and commemorated her with "stealing youth". But opinions vary from place to place, and many people don't know the real reason.
