Can humans edit genes in the future?

I think in the future, humans can edit genes. After all, society is developing rapidly now, and science and technology are also highly valued by all countries. I think the development of editing genes just needs a period of time to develop and recognize.

Recently, my friends around me will say that it would be nice if I could change the gene of my single eyelid. Indeed, if the gene can be re-edited, not to mention my single eyelid, there may be hope to cure cancer and other worldwide incurable diseases.

However, why hasn't editing genes really been realized? I think there are many reasons for this. For example, technology is not mature enough, and our understanding of the world needs to be promoted step by step. In addition, gene editing violates our social ethics to some extent, so some people still oppose it.
