Jiang Menglin's anecdotes.
In 1916, Chen Duxiu served as the dean of literature at Peking University and vigorously promoted the literary revolution. Jiang Menglin and Chen Duxiu get along well despite their different political opinions. They are both scholars in the former Qing Dynasty. There are two kinds of scholars: one is a scholar who advances in the examination of stereotyped writing, which is called stereotyped writing scholar; After stereotyped writing is abolished, it is called a strategic scholar, and it seems that stereotyped writing is not as valuable as a scholar. Jiang Menglin wrote in his reminiscence article: Chen Duxiu once asked me, "Alas! What kind of scholar are you? " "I am a scholar who is a strategist." He said, "Then you are a scholar of no value. I am a scholar of stereotyped writing." I bowed to him and said, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry. You are a senior gentleman. Indeed, you are a stereotyped scholar who is more valuable than me. " In Jiang Menglin's view, Chen Duxiu is "straightforward and treats his friends well", which is very good for Jiang Menglin's temper: "We have a similar habit. When we sit down at a banquet, we always like to eat cold dishes or the first and second courses as much as possible, and when the good dishes come, we are full. Therefore, everyone tells jokes and calls us two impatient people' in the same boat'. "
Although these friends, who were in the same boat, went further and further on the political road, when Chen Duxiu was in danger, Jiang Menglin saved him unequivocally. One day, Jiang received a phone call from a friend in the police station and said, "We are going to catch your friend (Chen Duxiu). Please let him know and run away early!"! Otherwise, everyone is inconvenient. " Jiang Menglin quickly ran to Chen's place with a student and told him to run away at once. So Li Dazhao accompanied Chen Duxiu to take a mule car and fled to Tianjin from the path. In 1918, when the autumn wind gently brushed the old capital, Mao Zedong took 23 young people from Hunan to Beijing in order to organize work-study programs in France. After arriving in Beijing, he arranged them to study in Peking University, Changxindian and Baoding, but he didn't want to study in France or go to university. He always advocated self-study. But you have to find a job to make a living. He stayed in Yang Changji, a professor at Peking University in Doufuchi Hutong behind Gulou, his later father-in-law's house. Through Yang Changji, Mao Zedong was recommended by Li Dazhao, director of Peking University Library, and got a job as a library assistant: managing 15 kinds of Chinese and foreign newspapers in the second reading room and registering the names of new newspapers and readers. Mao Zedong was very satisfied with this job, and later he talked about Si Nuo especially in the caves in Yan 'an. He not only earns a monthly income, but also reads a lot of novel books and periodicals, and he can get to know celebrities from Peking University and aspiring young people from all over the world. Chen Duxiu, Hu Shizhi and Zhang Guotao all met at that time. After work, he also had the opportunity to run to Tiananmen Square and listen to Li Dazhao's speech "The Victory of the Suburbs".
In his later years, Jiang Menglin wrote "On the New Literature and Art Movement in China", he recalled: "Mao Zedong became a secretary in Peking University Library when I was acting as principal. One day, Li Shouchang ran to the principal's office and said, Mao Zedong has no food. What should I do? I said, why not let him still run a cooperative? He said no, it was bankrupt. I said, is there anything wrong with the library? Give him a position. He said that the library could give him a secretary position. So I took a pen and wrote a note: Mao Zedong was appointed as the library secretary with a monthly salary of 17 yuan. "
On this matter, Jiang Menglin also said: Once, a British parliamentarian came to China, and when he heard this story that I didn't want to tell, he said, "At that time, you gave him seventeen yuan, eighteen yuan or nineteen yuan, in short, it was only a dozen yuan. If you had given him more money at that time, Mao Zedong might not have become a * * * production party." I said it's hard to say. Aren't many rich people becoming * * * producers? Divorce and remarriage
Jiang Menglin and Gao Renshan are best friends, and Tao Zenggu is Gao Renshan's widow. In 1928, due to political suspicion, Gao Renshan was killed by a warlord in Tianqiao execution ground. After Gao Renshan was killed, Jiang Menglin sympathized with Tao Zenggu's miserable situation and took good care of her. Soon, Jiang Menglin became the first Minister of Education of the National Government, and Tao Zenggu became his secretary. After a long time, they fell in love. Jiang Menglin announced that he was going to marry Tao Zenggu. He declared to his relatives and friends that the reason why he wanted to marry Tao Zenggu was to fulfill the obligations between friends. This statement became a big joke in the intellectual circles at that time. Jiang Dongxiu, the wife of Hu Shi, has always opposed Hu Shi's marriage for Jiang Menglin and Tao Zenggu. She thinks that Jiang Menglin divorced his original Sun Yushu because of Tao Zenggu, which is immoral. On the wedding day, she locked the door and refused to let Hu Shi attend the wedding. In the end, Hu Shi can only jump out of the window and "escape", which is a beautiful thing. After Jiang Menglin and Tao Zenggu got married, the relationship between husband and wife was quite harmonious, and their married life was satisfactory.
It is difficult to show one's ambition
Because Tao Zenggu has some shortcomings in dealing with people, this marriage has not brought much help to Jiang Menglin. One of the most obvious examples is that in 1944, Peking University "turned against Jiang Yinghu" and opposed Jiang Menglin's continuing to be the principal. During the Anti-Japanese War, Peking University moved inward and established Southwest United University with Tsinghua and Nankai. Although Jiang Menglin, a member of the Standing Committee of the General Assembly, did his best, he still had high hopes for Peking University, hoping to revive Peking University and revitalize China's cultural and educational undertakings after the victory of the Anti-Japanese War. However, just as he was full of ambition and ready to make great achievements in the resumed Peking University, there appeared a force in Peking University that opposed his succession as president of Peking University, including some famous professors such as his old friends Fu Sinian and Zhou Binglin. These people opposed Jiang Menglin, of course, because his appointment as the Secretary-General of the Executive Yuan as the president of Peking University was inconsistent with the regulations that university presidents were not allowed to be government officials at that time, but according to insiders, "his wife can't talk to many people" is also one of the important reasons. Fu Sinian also admitted that Jiang Menglin's relationship with Professor Peking University was not harmonious, and it was always Ms. Tao Zenggu's' contribution'. It is a great pity for Jiang Menglin that he can't display his ambition because of his wife.
Friends object
After the death of Tao Zenggu in p>1958, Jiang Menglin lived with his daughter and son-in-law. In the first two years, although there were many matchmakers, Jiang Menglin was unmoved. When Jiang Menglin first saw Xu Xianle in 196, he became possessed and surrendered his arms. Xu Xianle has been pursuing a lot of people. He once married Yang Jie. After seven months of marriage, the two ended in divorce because of money problems. When Xu Xianle met Jiang Menglin, although she was over 5 years old, her charm remained.
Jiang Menglin's friends are very anxious. Hu Shi, an old friend, has always been on Jiang Menglin's side. This time, he also voted against it. When Hu Shi lived in the hospital, he wrote to persuade Jiang Menglin and supported Jiang Menglin. Zhang Qun, Chen Cheng and other political friends in Jiang Menglin also expressed their objections to marriage.
Alarming the First Lady
Chen Cheng told Jiang Menglin bluntly: "My wife got a call from Mrs. Jiang (Song Meiling), the first lady. She resolutely opposed your marriage with this Miss Xu, and my wife also opposed it. She asked me to tell you. If you must marry her, then we can't meet again, at least, we can't meet your wife. "
Jiang Menglin hesitated. On July 11th, 1961, Jiang Menglin visited Hu Shi. As soon as he entered the ward, he said, "The child was disobedient. The doctor asked you to live in the city. You didn't listen to the doctor and moved back to Nangang. I have listened to your letter to me. Do you want to listen to what I say now? " Jiang Menglin vowed to Hu Shi that he would cancel the wedding. However, a week later, Hu Shi learned a news that Jiang Menglin had actually held a wedding.
Dissatisfied
At the end of p>1962, Jiang Menglin accidentally injured his foot and was hospitalized. After not being hospitalized for a long time, Xu Xianle was dissatisfied. On January 19, 1963, he moved out his original account in the Chiang family and moved his luggage back to his dormitory in the Central Trust Bureau. Jiang Menglin was discharged from hospital, and Xu Xianle had disappeared. What Xu Xianle did made Jiang Menglin intolerable any longer. On January 23, 1963, he entrusted Duan Mukai, the witness of the wedding ceremony and a famous barrister in Taiwan Province, to write to Xu Xianle, saying that "because their living habits and ideological interests are different, the longer they get along, the deeper the gap, and the more they disagree this time." After many days of consideration, they "decided to separate", but they can give Xu Xianle NT$ 3, a month. This proposal was rejected by Xu Xianle. On February 8, Jiang Menglin sent a second letter through Duanmukai, accusing Xu Xianle of taking the interest and dividends he deserved without authorization. On April 1th, Jiang Menglin formally requested a divorce from the Taipei District Court for "unbearable suffering from Xu Niang's abuse", and then held a special press conference.
Divorce Lawsuit
At this time, Jiang Menglin was in the twilight years, with a broken leg and weak constitution. When interviewed by the media, he burst into tears on the spot: "I am determined to divorce Ms. Xu. I have reasons and reasons. I am an old man who has been looking forward to a hundred years. I have done things in the society for decades, and I am not a child. How can I be so easily provoked? " "Up to now, I have been disappointed for more than a year, and I have suffered unbearable pain in life: home is the abyss of my pain, and I deeply regret that I didn't take the advice of my old friend Mr. Hu Shizhi (Hu Shi has passed away at this time) and made a mistake. I am ashamed of my old friend, and I should have the courage to admit my mistake to my old friend, and I should take the courage to correct my mistake. After the mediation of relatives and friends, I resolutely filed a lawsuit with the court for divorce, in order to protect the law. "
Xu Xianle is not to be outdone by these practices of Jiang Menglin. She kept publishing in newspapers and magazines on the topic of "Jiang Menglin and I", denying that she and Jiang Menglin had constituted the conditions for divorce. Xu Xianle's counterclaim is well organized and can't be regarded as a good article in divorce proceedings. In particular, the refutation of "invading the first room" lists that Mr. Jiang admired Ms. Tao in his marriage, separated from his original wife, and later Ms. Tao married the plaintiff. "Therefore, the plaintiff has objected to who this so-called' first room' refers to." As for Jiang's statement in the divorce paper that "she accused her of transferring the passbook, stock and land while Jiang was operating", her answer was neat. In today's words, it was the coquetry of her little children: "What you said at the beginning, all your things belonged to me, so what I did today was nothing more than to do as you wish."
On January 23rd, 1964, this protracted and sensational divorce lawsuit in Taiwan Province Island was finally settled through mediation. Jiang and Xu agreed to divorce, and Jiang paid Xu 5, yuan in alimony. Only half a year after the dust settled, on June 19th, Jiang Menglin died of liver cancer at the age of 78.
