The wind is blowing jokes.

? According to legend, Huineng, the sixth ancestor, quietly went down the mountain and embarked on the road of escape after the master secretly taught the Diamond Sutra and the robes symbolizing the succession in Feng Tomb Mountain. On the way to escape, Hojoji came to Guangzhou one day, just in time for the ceremony of Master Indo-Sect opening the Great Nirvana Sutra, and a famous case occurred: Wind, Vibration or Heart?

Master Yinzong was lecturing on the stage when a strong wind suddenly blew, and two monks had an argument over this trivial matter. One said it was blown by the wind, the other said it was moving, and both of them disagreed with each other. Huineng interrupted after listening to the audience: "It's neither the wind nor the movement, but your heart is moving." When a word came out, everyone present was shocked.

The story of the wind shaking has been circulating for a long time, and it was even more shocking at that time. So, how do we understand this statement from Buddhism?

From our common sense, the wind is of course the active side and the fan is the passive side. The banner was originally static, because the wind blew, so it was blown by the wind, which is a very intuitive phenomenon. We can put it another way: someone passes in front of you on a bicycle. Is it a person or a car If people don't move, the car doesn't move, but your heart is moving, then this cyclist will never get to his destination, right?

However, from Buddhism, there is another understanding.

First of all, there are two things, wind and banners. Then, it seems that both of them are moving. What is sports? Motion is displacement. An object moves from point A to point B. ..

Because displacement is a moving "process", it takes time. For example, it takes you an hour to walk from home to work. When we take time into account, you should think of the impermanence and selflessness of Buddhism. You have to ask yourself: are you the same person who was at home an hour ago and went to work an hour later?

If you say "yes", it is correct in common sense and wrong in essence.

If we say "no", it is true in essence and wrong in vulgarity.

It is a vulgar truth that we understand the world from phenomena; Understanding the world in essence is the true meaning.

There is a school of modern philosophy called phenomenology. If we understand it from the perspective of Buddhism, we can say that phenomenology thinks that the real meaning is beyond the understanding ability of human beings, and there is no need to waste effort. It is better to focus on vulgar truth and understand what we can understand.

But Buddhism pursues the true meaning. In essence, you are the aggregation of the four big five aggregates, which are changing rapidly. So a moment ago you weren't who you are now, and a moment later you won't be who you are now. Every moment you are a brand-new you.

According to this understanding, there is no "one you" who walks from home to work for an hour, but there are countless you who appear in countless positions on the way from home to work in countless moments. At every point in time, and at the corresponding position of each point in time, there is a group of things called "you" which are aggregated by four major five aggregates.

Obviously, no "you" has been displaced, so there is no movement. Just like you, the wind and the flag are the aggregation of the birth and death of the four five aggregates, in other words, they are all "no self", from which it can be inferred that sports do not exist.

However, why do we firmly believe in the existence of sports in our daily life? Because our hearts don't understand the meaning of Buddhism and the essence of the world, we can only know the world from phenomena, so we understand the static wind and flags as moving things.

It's not the wind, it's not fluttering, it's your heart.
