The Mythical Story of Lotus (1) Lotus Lotus is everyone’s favorite flower. It is a perennial herb that likes to grow in shallow water such as ponds and lakes. It relies on the rhizome, the lotus root, that remains in the underwater soil from the previous year. It takes root and sprouts every spring, unfolds its leaves and flowers in the summer, and swells the roots into lotus roots and bears seeds in the autumn. The rhizome of the lotus is initially as thin as a human finger. Its white part embedded in the mud is called the lotus root, commonly known as the lotus whip. The lotus whip has nodes one by one, and the nodes regenerate new lotus whips, which are intertwined and intertwined, forming its underwater world. . Each node produces fibrous roots downward and takes root in the underwater mud. At the end of the growth period of lotus every summer and autumn, the part of the lotus whip that has penetrated into the soil will swell into lotus roots, which can be used to sprout new plants next spring. The lotus stretches its stem upwards, pulling out leaves and buds one by one to form its water world. There are thin and dense hairs on the lotus stems, the green leaves are oval, the flowers come in several varieties, including light red and white, and the petals can be single or double. After the flowers fade, a lotus pod is formed, containing multiple nuts, commonly known as lotus seeds. The whole body of the lotus is beneficial to human beings: the lotus root is edible, the lotus seeds are a good nourishing product, the flowers and leaves can be viewed by people, and its lotus joints, lotus seeds, lotus leaves, etc. are good medicinal materials for treating diseases in traditional Chinese medicine. Where lotus grows, it also has the function of purifying water quality, optimizing the environment and beautifying the scenery. With its green leaves and red flowers, the lotus forms a colorful and graceful style. It is a popular ornamental flower and has been praised as the "Green Cover Beauty" by literati of the past dynasties. Different from the beauties in the world, the beauty of lotus is natural beauty without any artificial decoration. Li Bai's poem "Hibiscus emerges from clear water, and the natural decoration is removed" vividly summarizes this characteristic of lotus. Not only that, the lotus is also called the "gentleman among flowers" by many poets because of its character of "coming out of the mud but not staining". They often use it as a metaphor to praise those who are unwilling to go with the world and have high moral integrity. (2) The legend of March 3rd (Lotus Legend) Once upon a time there was a mountain with a temple and a nunnery on it. A monk in the temple fell in love with a nun in the nunnery. As time went by, their love grew deeper and deeper. However, they who are both monks cannot form a couple and can only meet in secret from time to time. One year on March 3rd, they met by a lake and were discovered by a beggar. The beggar passed by accidentally, but in the dark night the beggar looked like the abbot in her nunnery. The nun was so frightened that she jumped into the lake and committed suicide. The monk saw the nun jumping into the lake. He didn't know the depth of the lake. He just wanted to save the nun, but he also drowned. After the beggar happened upon the monk and nun's affair, he hurried away in embarrassment. But then I heard two sounds of water, and then I heard the monk calling for the nun in the water. It turned out that the nun committed suicide in shame. Thinking that it was all her fault, she turned around quickly and jumped into the lake to save people. Unfortunately, none of them knew the nature of water, and they all drowned in the lake. No one in the world knew about this tragedy and comedy, except the Earth Bodhisattva who saw it all. He sympathized with their plight, but he could not save them because the monks and nuns had violated Buddhist precepts after all! The corpses of the monks and nuns were quickly eaten by the big fish in the lake. The bones floated together and gradually sank into the mud at the bottom of the lake. The fish thought the beggar had a bad smell and did not eat his body, so the beggar's body floated to the surface. Both the monk and the nun felt that they had died unjustly, and they complained to the Bodhisattva of the Earth, saying, "We cannot be husband and wife in this world. Can we connect our bones that have sunk in the mud and give us a little life?" The Bodhisattva of the Earth said: " Because you have violated the Buddhist rules, you can only be with the mud after death. But since you are all human beings, there is nothing wrong with love between men and women in this world, so your bones are allowed to be connected in the mud and restored to life." Monk. When the nun's soul saw that the Bodhisattva of the Land agreed, he went even further and asked to come out every year to see the world. The Earth Bodhisattva was soft-hearted and actually agreed, but stipulated that they could not leave the mud. Every year, they have to wait until the third day of March, their death anniversary, to get out of the water and explore the world. When the beggar's spirit saw that both the monk and the nun were allowed to regain their vitality, they also came to the Earth Bodhisattva and said: "Although I was responsible for the death of the monk and the nun, I did not do it unintentionally. Can you also restore my vitality and come to the world to play every year?" "For a while?" The Earth Bodhisattva felt that the beggar was right, so he said, "Okay, you will become a water snake and go see the world on the third day of March every year."
" Later, the white bones of the monk and the nun grew into lotus roots that humans like to eat. The joints were connected with holes to show that they were connected. The joints were covered with filaments, which could be connected even if they were broken. The monk let himself Grow into a lotus leaf, the nun lets herself grow into a lotus. Every year on the third day of March, the lotus leaf first rolls into a sharp angle and emerges from the water, and then slowly unfolds. The lotus originally emerged from the water on the third day of March, but unexpectedly. She felt embarrassed about what happened in the past. She would shyly come out of the gap when the lotus leaves grew bigger. Of course, the water snake was not shy. Every year on the third day of March, it would eagerly emerge from its hole in the earth. Therefore, there is a proverb that "every year on March 3rd, the snake comes out of the hole and the lotus root comes out." Supplement: 3) Bingdilian Legend has it that there was a lotus pond in a village long ago, and there was a lotus pond in it every year. There were beautiful lotuses growing all over the place. There lived a Yuanwai named Hong. His family was very rich, but he was over forty years old and he still had no children. This year, Yuanwai’s wife became pregnant, and Yuanwai Hong burned incense and worshiped the Buddha day and night. He prayed to Bodhisattva to bless him with a son. But the baby was born a girl. In order to comfort Yuan Wai, his wife discussed raising the girl as a son and told others that she had a boy. Later, when Sailang grew up, he always dressed like a boy. When he was twelve years old, Hong Yuanwai built a library in front of the lotus pond and asked a familiar teacher to teach Sailang. People outside thought that Sai Lang was a boy. Besides, there was a family named Bai living in Tangxi. The old couple lived well, but they had no sons. Dead. For this matter, Lao Bai asked fortune tellers several times, and they all said that they were "destined to have no children." This year, his wife became pregnant again, and Lao Bai thought to himself: "It is possible to have a daughter." Live, if you give birth to a boy, you will be afraid and keep it. His wife thought of a way: "If you give birth to a son, just raise him as a daughter, and he will not die again." Later, another son was born, and the couple put earrings on the child and named him Called Zhen Niang. When Zhenniang was thirteen years old, she was more beautiful than girls. The old couple loved their son and tried their best to send Zhenniang to study. When they heard that Mr. Hong's wife's family had set up a library in Dongcun, they asked someone to intercede and offered her husband two buckets of rice per month to send Zhenniang to study. People outside thought Zhenniang was a girl. When Zhenniang arrived at the school, she got along very well with a dozen children, especially Sailang. She read at the same desk every day at school, and the two of them had to play by the lotus pond for a while before going home. The classmates saw how close they were, and one day, while the teacher was away, they made a joke and asked Sailang and Zhenniang to worship in the flower hall. No one knew that Sailang was a girl and Zhenniang was a boy. Sai Lang also thought that Zhenniang was really a girl, and Zhenniang also thought that Sai Lang was really a boy. In a flash, several years passed. Sailang is already fifteen years old, and Zhenniang is sixteen years old. The two of them often remembered the incident when they first entered the school. Sai Lang thought to himself: Zhenniang is smart, kind, talented and well-educated. Whoever marries her as his wife in the future will be really happy. Zhenniang also thought this way: if she was really a woman, she would definitely marry Sai Lang. Seeing that another two years have passed, the students are about to break up. Sailang said to Zhenniang: "My studies are over, and I'm afraid you and I won't be able to see each other very often from now on," and he shed tears. Zhenniang said: "Brother Sailang, don't be sad. My home is not far from your place, and we can come and go often." But Sailang knew in his heart that he was getting older and would be locked up in the boudoir by his parents and unable to go out from now on; Both he and Zhenniang are going to get married. Who knows where they will get married? She said to Zhenniang: "Let's become sisters!" Zhenniang thought: Isn't it a joke for two men to become sisters? They waved their hands repeatedly: "No, no, no, let's become sworn brothers!" After arguing for a long time, they finally said: "Forget it, we just become sworn brothers!" In this way, the two of them confusedly became sworn brothers by the lotus pond. Addendum: Sailang changed into women's clothes after returning home and stayed in the boudoir all day, often missing Zhenniang. Zhenniang is at home and always wants to see Sai Lang. Zhenniang's father, Lao Bai, fell ill and died, so her mother asked Zhenniang to take off her earrings, put on men's clothes, and asked him to put on mourning flags for Lao Bai and send him to his grave. It was only then that the whole village knew that Zhenniang was actually a man. The news reached Mr. Hong's foreign home. Sai Lang was surprised and happy when he heard it. Surprisingly, the rich man did not know that he was a boy after being with him for many years; he was so happy that he met such an amiable person as Zhenniang.
But when Hong Yuanwai heard the news, he lost his temper. He called for Zhenniang's mother and scolded her in person: "You have a son at home, who would rob it from you? Why did a man dress up as a woman and send it to her?" I come to the library to study and spend the whole day with Sai Lang, which ruins the family tradition!" Zhen Niang's mother was confused and said, "My Zhen Niang is with Sai Lang. What's wrong with my wife? The other side said that she realized that Sai Lang was a woman, and she couldn't help being surprised. Then he thought again that the Hong family was really unreasonable, so he said angrily: "Your girls can dress up as men and go to school, why can't my boys dress up as women and go to school?" Hong Yuanwai had no words to answer and ordered people to do so. He drove Zhenniang's mother out of the door. When Zhenniang heard her mother say that Sailang was a woman, she was very happy and determined to marry her. The mother knew that the Hong family would not agree and refused to find a "matchmaker", so Zhenniang was depressed all day long. A few days later, suddenly a letter came from the Hong family's maid. When I opened it, I saw it was from Sai Lang. The letter said that she was locked up in the boudoir by her parents and how she missed Zhenniang; it also said how happy she was to know that Zhenniang was a boy. Zhenniang read the letter and knew that Sai Lang was interested in him. She was very happy and quickly wrote a reply letter and asked the maid to take it back. From then on, the two of them kept communicating with each other. One night, Zhenniang asked her mother to ask a matchmaker to propose marriage. The mother felt sorry for her son and agreed to give it a try. Unexpectedly, the matchmaker was driven back before entering the Hong family gate. The matchmaker said to Zhenniang: "Give up! The Yuanwai said that firstly, he thought your family was poor and could not afford to support his daughter; secondly, you two were classmates, and now marrying you would be a 'disgrace' and a disgrace." The family has a good family tradition." When Zhenniang saw that the matter could not succeed, she became sick with sorrow; her mother was so anxious that she cried day and night. Besides, Sai Lang was so anxious that he fell ill when he heard that the Bai family had asked a matchmaker to propose marriage but was rejected by their parents. In order to make his daughter give up, Heng Yuanwai secretly asked people to drive the Bai family mother and son out of the village. When Sai Lang heard the news, he was so angry that he simply stopped eating. The illness is getting worse day by day. Besides, Mother Zhen was driven out of the village by the Hong family and moved to the city forty miles away. Soon after, Zhenniang's illness got better. Unexpectedly, her mother fell ill again, and her health became worse day by day. Zhenniang only relied on doing small business every day to survive. A few months later, his mother died. Zhenniang buried her mother and decided to return to the village to find Sai Lang. He sold his things at home, bought some flowers, threads and other goods, packed them into bags, disguised himself as a salesman, returned to the village, and lived in a dilapidated temple. Supplement: One day, he shook the rattle in his hand and secretly walked around to the back garden of Hong's house. Sailang's maid heard the sound of the drum and came out to buy flower thread. When she saw it was Zhenniang, she was so surprised that she hurried in and told Sailang. . Sai Lang immediately wrote a letter and asked the maid to give it to Zhen Niang, telling him to leave here quickly. Zhen Niang ran back to the temple and opened it. It turned out that Sai Lang had asked him to meet at the Lotus Pond at midnight tonight. Zhenniang was so happy that she looked forward to the darkening. At the third watch, by the lotus pond, Sai Lang and Zhen Niang hugged their heads and started crying as soon as they met. Crying, crying, Sai Lang said to Zhenniang: "Dad is cruel, it will be difficult for us to get married. I hope you take care of yourself and don't worry about me anymore." After saying that, he jumped into the water. Zhenniang stepped forward and hugged her, crying and saying: "We can't live together, but we would rather die together." After saying that, the two hugged her and jumped into the water together. The maid waited until the rooster crow before Sai Lang came back. She knew something was wrong but did not dare to say anything. The next day, the Hong family searched everywhere and found one of Sai Lang's embroidered shoes by the lotus pond. They knew that he had jumped into the water. Officer Hong hurriedly ordered people to fish it out. He saw Zhenniang and Sailang hugging each other tightly, and several people could not pull them apart even though they tried their best. Yuan Hong ordered people to bury them by the lotus pond. That night there was only lightning and thunder and a violent storm. Waiting until dawn, the water in the lotus pond was seen rising to the graves of Zhenniang and Sai Lang, surrounding the graves: the stems of the lotus growing on the graves were thicker than a human thumb. There were two flowers blooming on the top, one red and one white, close together. People called it "Bing Tie Lotus", and later called it "Bing Ti Di".
