An English porter met an American tourist impatiently poking at the elevator button in the hotel.

"Sir, the elevator will be here soon."

"lift? Lift? " The American replied, "Oh, you mean the elevator" (elevator is called lift in British English and elevator in American English).

"No, sir, we call it an elevator here."

"Well, since the elevator was invented in America, it should be called an elevator."

Yes, sir, but English was invented here. It should be called lift.
