Is ethanol alcohol?

There is no difference between ethanol and alcohol. Ethanol is a chemical name, and alcohol is a popular name for ethanol. The difference between ethanol and alcohol is the concentration, but there is no difference in the same chemical itself.

100% ethanol can be diluted into 75% ethanol and 95% ethanol according to the concentration, and the diluted liquid is popularly called alcohol.

1.75% ethanol is medical alcohol, which has disinfection effect and volatility. Its uses include medical instrument disinfection, skin disinfection and wound disinfection.

2.95% alcohol is industrial alcohol, so it can't be used for human disinfection to avoid harm. Mainly used in detergents, cosmetics, extractant, medicine, plastics, rubber, ink and so on.

Main types

1. According to the raw materials used in production, it can be divided into starch raw material fermented alcohol, molasses raw material fermented alcohol and sulfite pulp waste liquid fermented to produce alcohol.

(1) Fermentation of alcohol with starchy raw materials: generally, starchy raw materials such as potatoes, cereals and wild plants are used as raw materials, and starch is hydrolyzed into glucose under the action of microorganisms, and then further fermented by yeast to produce alcohol;

(2) Alcohol fermentation of molasses: directly using sugar in molasses, diluting and sterilizing, adding some nutrients, and fermenting with yeast to produce alcohol;

⑶ Fermentation of sulfite pulp waste liquor to produce alcohol: Six-carbon sugar contained in papermaking waste liquor is fermented into alcohol under the action of yeast. The main product is industrial alcohol, but there is also alcohol made by hydrolyzing sawdust with dilute acid.

2. According to the production methods, it can be divided into two categories: fermented alcohol and synthetic alcohol.

3. According to the product quality or nature, it can be divided into high-purity alcohol, anhydrous alcohol, ordinary alcohol and denatured alcohol.

4. According to the product series: GB 394- 198 1 (abolished) alcohol was once divided into excellent grade, first grade, second grade, third grade and fourth grade, among which the first and second grades are equivalent to high-purity alcohol and ordinary distilled alcohol, the third grade is equivalent to medicinal alcohol and the fourth grade is equivalent to industrial alcohol.

The current GB/T 394. 1-2008 classifies industrial alcohol into four categories: excellent grade, first grade, second grade and crude alcohol. The current GB 10343-2008 classifies edible alcohol into three categories: super grade, excellent grade and ordinary grade.
