Appreciation of ten classic couplets

It is not difficult to make couplets, but it is not easy to make good couplets. To identify the advantages and disadvantages of couplets, we must first improve our appreciation ability. Therefore, it is beneficial to read more ancient and modern couplets. Choose some couplets here to enjoy with your friends.

1. The sound of reading is accompanied by the sound of wind and rain

The sound of reading is heard by the sound of wind and rain

Care about family affairs, national affairs, and everything in the world

This couplet was written by Gu Xiancheng, leader of the Donglin Party in the Ming Dynasty ("Ming Lian Tan Qu" 275). Gu founded Donglin Academy in Wuxi. After giving lectures, he often commented on government affairs. Later, people used it to advocate "reading without forgetting to save the country", which still has positive significance today. The first couplet combines the sound of reading and the sound of wind and rain, which is both poetic and profound. The second line contains the ambition of harmonizing the family, governing the country, and bringing peace to the world. The wind is against the rain, the home is against the country, the ear is against the heart, it is extremely neat, especially the repeated words in conjunction, like hearing the sound of books.

(Volume 6 of "Couplets") There is a couplet at Yongji Temple next to Yanziji in Nanjing (Volume 6 of "Couplets") which says:

The sound of pines, the sound of bamboos, the sound of bells and chimes The sound is free

The mountains, water, haze, and colors are all empty

An original couplet from Fangguang Temple in Tiantai Mountain, Zhejiang (page 139 of Su Wenyang's "Ancient and Modern Couples") says:

p>

The sound of the wind, the sound of water, the sound of insects, the sound of birds, the chanting of Sanskrit, the sound of bells, the sound of the bell, is silent for three hundred and sixty days

The moonlight, the color of the mountains, the color of the grass, the color of the trees, the color of the clouds, and the color of the clouds are more than 48,000 feet tall. The peaks and mountains are all colored and empty

The above two couplets use the same artistic method as the first couplet, and there is no author or date. Therefore, it cannot be determined who is the innovation and who is the imitation; but it can be explained that the same artistic method is , can express completely different thoughts and interests.

2. The Nine-Chong Festival is celebrated on the fortress

Eighty-year-old kings celebrate their birthdays everywhere by the eighteen fair roads

The Nine-Chong Emperor pays tribute to the Nine Festivals every year 觞

This couplet is a new couplet of Wansongling Palace (Volume 2 of "Couplets Series") collaborated by Peng Yuanrui and Ji Xiaolan. The first couplet is written by Peng Yuanrui, and the second couplet is answered by Ji Xiaolan. Before the Double Ninth Festival in the 55th year of Qianlong's reign (1790), Qianlong returned from hunting at Mulan Paddock in Rehe and stayed at Wansongling Palace.

The couplet is a eulogy for Qianlong's 80th birthday. The beauty lies in the specific person (Qianlong), the specific place (Wansongling), and the specific time (Double Ninth Festival). It also uses split characters (Song-Shiba Gong) and repeated characters (everywhere, Year) and the high skill of inverting the two characters "self-respect and self-pair" (eighty, eighteen; nine, double nine) are not clichés or word games. Although they are flattering works, they can be said to be the best couplets.

3. I won’t go home this season.

No car, no fish, contemporary Mengchang can be a guest for me

I won’t go home this season until my gold is exhausted. Home

This couplet is a Spring Festival couplet made by "Lian Sheng" Fang Dishan. Fang is a disciple of Yuan Shikai and the teacher of Yuan Hanyun, the second son of Yuan Shikai ("Famous Lianqutan" 284). One Spring Festival he wrote this couplet, saying that my employer treated me very well, but he would not go home during the Spring Festival this year. Fang praised his boss as Lord Mengchang and compared himself to Su Qin. He praised both his boss and himself. It was indeed a generous "masterpiece". When Mr. Wang Junshi taught this couplet in the 1940s, he used another version. The second couplet is "The gold is not finished, the clothes are not worn". Unfortunately, its origin is unknown.

This couplet is structurally composed of two three-character sentences and one seven-character sentence. It has a strong sense of rhythm when read. It is expressed as a binary sequence: 110, 110, 1100011/001, 001, 0011100 It can be seen that the three-character sentence pattern is repeated once, and overlaps with the first three characters of the seven-character sentence pattern. Therefore, structurally, the three-character sentence pattern is only a partial repetition of the seven-character sentence pattern. This is the best structure we didn't mention above. This couplet is also very particular about the use of allusions. The first couplet uses the story "Feng Xuan Ke Mengchangjun" and the second couplet uses the story "Su Qin Yi Lianheng talks about Qin", both of which come from "Warring States Policy". Reading this couplet is equivalent to reviewing two famous works.

4. The east wall is inverted and the west wall is inverted

The east wall is inverted and the west wall is inverted to see the beauty of the house

The front alley is deep and the back alley is so deep that no traffic or horses can be heard. Zhiyin

Zhu Xi presented a couplet to a scholar in Zhangzhou (Volume 1 of "Couplets"). Zhu Xi was an acting scholar of the Song Dynasty, but he was not always sanctimonious as people imagined. This couplet is very humane and humorous. It depicts a scholar. Although his living conditions are poor, his family is harmonious and his life is happy. Although no one comes to visit him, he can study with peace of mind. The first couplet is a bit exaggerated, but the contrast is strong. This is the earliest use of rhyming couplets.

It’s shameful to have guests drunk but no one to sleep with. Simple and simple songs are shameful

Long songs, thick short songs and sparse poems are ordinary chatting for self-entertainment

Liang Zhangju also wrote a couplet in rhyme as above (Volume 12 of "Couplets Cong Hua"). This couplet hangs in the "Tenghua Yin Pavilion", which records his life and self-evaluation in Fuzhou after he returned home due to illness at the age of 58. The use of rhyme in the couplet is not necessary, but the use of rhyme makes it easier to read. Ten years later, he revised this couplet:

Guests come, drunken guests go to sleep, old people have nothing to do, it’s a shame

On learning, politics, poetry, not having a family, talking about oneself Entertainment

This couplet hangs in the "Thatched Cottage" in Pucheng when he was 68 years old (Volume 2 of "Continuation of Couplets"). Comparing the two couplets, we can understand that Liang Zhangju also put a lot of effort into poetry.

New acquaintances, old acquaintances, we have an appointment at the spring night, so it’s time to ask, what night is it tonight? The same moonlight and lights should be looking for

Traveling here, traveling there, the scenery is so fun, there is no end, the situation is ahead Teahouses and restaurants were left behind for the next few times

This couplet was written by He Danru (1820-?) for the "Spring Colorful Competition" in Foshan (Article 54 of "Famous Couplets Talking about Fun"). It describes the joyful scene of the Lantern Festival among the people: the lights and the moon shine together, and there are so many tourists, what a beautiful spring night!

The use of rhyme strengthens the cheerful and romantic atmosphere.

5. A drunkard calls the sacred herb

The calligraphy reaches the gods, the paper leaves the clouds, and the eight methods are passed down in ancient and modern times

The drunkard calls the holy herb a good time when the house is full of storms. Lay three cups

This is a couplet written by Liang Zhangju for the Cao Sheng Temple in Changshu, Jiangsu Province (Volume 1 of "Couplet Continuation"). Zhangxu of the Tang Dynasty was a county captain in Changshu. He was good at cursive calligraphy and was addicted to alcohol. Every time he got drunk, he yelled and ran away wildly before writing. He was known as the "Sage of Cursive Calligraphy" in the world. This couplet brings Zhang Xu's writing and drinking style to life. It's like seeing the person, watching his words.

Different generations and different times asked about such a country, how many poets and poets crouched in the country

The gentleman also lived in a thatched cottage with a long flow, a sky and an earth, a moon, a white wind, and a clear wind

This is the Qing Dynasty A couplet written by the contemporary poet Gu Fuchu for Du Fu Thatched Cottage in Chengdu (page 148 of "Ancient and Modern Couplets"). Du Fu is the "Poet Sage", his style is different from that of the "Cao Sage", and the thatched cottage is not an ancestral temple. This couplet focuses on the times.

The first couplet sighs and says that there have been several poets like Du Fu in thousands of years.

The second line says that even a poet like this was not proud at the time, but his spiritual wealth has been passed down.

6. The fate of Pingshui became a dream

Thousands of miles south of the sky, the wings of the sky are soaring, and the worries for the rest of my life. The fate of Pingshui became a dream

In the past few years, Yan Zhi in the North has been The peach blossoms of the hero and confidant are lost in sorrow and the peach blossoms are eternal

This is the couplet of Xiaofengxian congratulating Cai E (page 202 of "Ancient and Modern Lianhua"). This couplet is rich in love words and well-written, and the children's love is long-lasting without losing the heroic qualities. Commentators believe that it was not written by Xiao Fengxian, but whose handwriting remains to be verified. The Yan branch is Yanzhi, which is opposite to Pengyi. Karma has a broader meaning than marriage.

The reputation has been greatly slandered, and the academic debate has yet to be finalized.

If you are strong, you will sleep when you are tired. The philosopher's wilting will not eliminate the sorrow of a generation

This is Liang Hancao's couplet to win over Hu Shi (Article 390 of "Talking about Famous Couples"). The first couplet said that Hu Shi is a famous person and the most controversial person, but there is no need to "finalize the coffin" on academic issues. The second line believes that life and death are natural laws, life is like a dream, and everyone has to die once, but his death will inevitably make a generation feel sad. This couplet is fair in argument and mature in tone. It is not praising but self-promoting, not sad but more sad. It is an intriguing elegiac couplet.

My brother is speechless, scribbling articles and drinking hard

When the child returns home, the flowers will not fall and the wind and rain will bury the soul.

This is the couplet of Mr. Wu Yanghan in Taicang to save Hu Cuishi. Mr. Qian Zhongshu has a poem in "Huai Ju Shi Cun" titled "A certain villager wrote about his crying son. His son joined the army in Burma, and his family was not exhausted. He knocked on the ji, and the god descended on the book plate and said, "Come back." Come, Hu will not return." The "countryman" is Hu Cuishi (1888-1946). Hu, a native of Shaxi, Taicang, went to the United States to study in 1931 and received a master's degree in electrical engineering. After returning to China, he served as professor and library director of Shanghai Nanyang University (the predecessor of Jiaotong University). During the Anti-Japanese War, my beloved son Jingkan died in the line of duty in Burma. He wrote "The Story of a Crying Child" to express his pain through writing, and drank to drown his sorrows. Wu was once the director of Taicang Library, a well-known scholar, and a close friend of Hu. The first line says, "The old man passed away without a trace, leaving behind "The Story of a Crying Child" and the sad image of drinking desperately." The second line says, "Young Master can't come back even if he wants to. He can only let the fallen flowers of spring fade away in the wind and rain." The soul of your poetry is buried. "This couplet cleverly uses "Brother" as a homophone for "Cicada", which loves to sing, and "Zigui" as a homophone for "Zigui", a cuckoo bird that cries about homesickness and blood. Moreover, the word "duplicate" is used, which is like hearing the sound of whimpering. The contrast between Gongli and Gongli is profound, and the grief is vividly expressed through artistic means. It can be called a masterpiece of elegiac couplets. This couplet was provided by the calligrapher Mr. Hu Shengqi based on his memory fifty years ago. It is very valuable, otherwise it will be lost in obscurity.

7. The distant mountains swallow the Yangtze River

The mountains swallow the Yangtze River and its southwest peaks and forest ravines are particularly beautiful

Sending off the setting sun and welcoming the prime moon at the end of spring and summer Between the grass and trees and the sky

This is a couplet from the Yangzhou Pingshan Hall collection written by Yi Bingshou. The first couplet collects the middle sentences of Fan Zhongyan's "Yueyang Tower" and Ouyang Xiu's "The Drunkard's Pavilion", and the second couplet collects the middle sentences of Wang Yucheng's "Huanggang Bamboo Tower", which is naturally integrated (page 128 of "Ancient and Modern Lianhua"). By reading a good couplet of famous places, you can not only visit the famous places, but also review famous works, killing two birds with one stone and having endless fun.

The dragon pool reflects the thirteen peaks, hidden dragons in the sky, and flying dragons on the ground

Half a mile of jade water makes black jade the body and beryl the god

This is what Guo Moruo wrote about Lijiang. Moon Tower Couplet (Wang Cunxin and Wang Renqing's "Selected Notes on Couplets of Chinese Scenic Spots and Monuments", page 471). This couplet describes the landscape environment of Yue Tower, which is fascinating. Lianjia requires a poet's imagination to turn beauty into magic.

8. Chicheng Xia in the Canghai Sea

This is a study couplet inscribed by Li Dongyang of the Ming Dynasty (" "Famous couplets about fun" 589). What makes this couplet unique is the extensive use of three-sentence sentences. In the most concise words, it covers the wonders of the universe and the unique skills of ancient and modern times. It paints the walls of my house and builds my villa. This is indeed a wonder of joining the world and a unique art of joining families.

This is a couplet of Yueyang Towers inscribed by He Shaoji of the Qing Dynasty (page 109 of "Dictionary of Appreciation of Famous Places"). Du Shaoling's five-character masterpiece refers to Du Fu's "Climbing the Yueyang Tower": "In the past, I heard the Dongting water, now I go up to the Yueyang Tower, southeast of Wu and Chu, the world floats day and night, there are no relatives and friends, old and sick, there are lonely boats, soldiers and horses pass through the north of the mountain, and Pingxuan tears stream." Fan Xiwen's two words "Guan Qing" refer to the two words "worry" and "le" in Fan Zhongyan's "Yueyang Tower", "worry before the world is worried, and be happy after the world is happy". Teng Zijing's "Thousands of Wastes Are Prosperous" refers to Wang Bo's "Preface to Prince Teng's Pavilion", "Teng Zijing was relegated to Baling County. Over the next year, with political integrity and harmony, all wastes are prosperous". Lu Chunyang was Lu Dongbin, and he visited Yueyang Tower three times. The first couplet writes about the humanities of Yueyang Tower, and the second couplet writes about the water potential of Dongting Lake. The long history and the vast river are full of emotion.

9. After sixty, you are still young

How can you ask Kang Ning as if you are a guest? But you have money in your bag, wine in the pot, grain in the cauldron, a few leaves of old paper that are pleasing to the eye, and you sing in the wind

p>

If you want to be broad-minded and naughty, your facial features should be smart and agile, and you will be better than a thousand officials. After sixty years, there are still few people.

Determined to become a fairy, and have troubles in the sky. Only the ears have no worldly sounds, the eyes have no worldly things, the chest has no worldly affairs. A few random new flowers are interspersed

Go to bed late and wake up early. One day of leisure seems to be more than a hundred years old in two days

This is the 60th birthday couplet of Banqiao in Qing Dynasty (" Couplet Cong Hua" Volume 12). Although this couplet is about expressing ambitions, it is written vividly and lively. It contains tips for maintaining health and talks about experience, which shows Zheng Banqiao's personal style.

10. Five Hundred Miles of Dianchi Lake

Five Hundred Miles of Dianchi Lake, rushing towards the shore, my eyes covered with lapels, I am happy to see the boundless vastness, looking at the divine horse in the east and the spiritual instrument in the west, walking north and winding south. Why don't you, an expert in Xiangxi and Luozhou, choose to climb aboard? Take advantage of the crab island and Luozhou to comb the wind, and the clouds on your temples will be dotted with green feathers and red clouds on the reed ground. Don't live up to the fragrant rice, thousands of clear sands, nine summer hibiscus and three spring willows.

< p>Thousands of years of past events are brought to my mind. I drink wine and sigh. Who is thinking about the heroes? The clouds are broken, the broken monuments are all given to the green smoke, and the falling light shines. Only a few pestles are scattered, half a river, two rows of fishing fires, autumn geese, and a pillow of clear frost.

This is the long couplet of Kunming Grand View Tower written by Sun Yan ("Couplet Cong Hua") 》Volume 7). This couplet has been recited throughout the country and has become an immortal work. Its structural feature is the repeated use of the four-character pattern (0011, 1100, 1100, 0011 / 1100, 0011, 0011, 1100), with three groups of self-pairing characters on the same side as the center, and different numbers of collar lining characters added at different positions. The writing is colorful and the tone is continuous.

1 , politely asking for bribes and making puns

Bamboo shoots come out of the wall, each branch must be taller

Plum blossoms are inferior to snow, three points are only three points

"Xue Tao's Comic History" " contains a joke: It is said that every festival, a scholar will send gifts to the county school. When the instructor saw that the scholar didn't plunk out a hair, he immediately chanted the couplet and used the theme to play on it: "When bamboo shoots come out of the wall, one section must be higher than the other." The meaning is very clear, we should add some gifts during festivals. The scholar borrowed Lu Meipo's poem "Snow Plum" to answer the question correctly. The clear limit is three points to show that the plum blossoms are white and pretty, implying that the number of knots cannot be increased, otherwise they will not be able to make a living. Instructor Wu Guangwen added a couplet of his own: "Even if the plum blossoms are as soft as the snow, they should be worth three points; but the greener ones are better than the blue ones, so they should be reduced by half." The first couplet emphasizes that the regulation instrument is the lowest, and the lowest score is three points. "Gao Ming, but unfortunately the moral etiquette given to teachers is getting less and less.

The first couplet is a matter of fact, and the reasoning is appropriate; the second couplet is a collection of poems, and the contrast is stable.

In this way, although what Quanlian is talking about is a sober and polite money transaction, it appears to be elegant, interesting, and elegant.

2. Unique single and double pair

In the late Ming Dynasty, two scholars took advantage of the beautiful spring breeze to travel around the mountains and rivers. Walking into a temple, they saw a statue of a general, holding a sword in his hand and sitting on a horse. He looked heroic and had a wonderful appearance. The two of them made a couplet in front of the door to encourage their visit. A's first couplet:

In a lonely temple on a lonely mountain, a general works alone;

B's sentences are plain, but they are all in the odd number, and he is in a dilemma. While concentrating, I suddenly saw two fishermen fishing opposite each other on both sides of the river at the bottom of the mountain. I had an idea and said:

On both sides of the mountain, two fishermen fished opposite each other with double hooks.

They were all facing each other in even numbers. "Clamp, two, two, double, pair" versus "solitary, alone, one, single, match" are ingenious and natural, connecting the two together.

3. Zhang Shan's answer to "No Water Smoke"

There was a scholar named Zhang Shan who was a friend of scholars and was good at talking to others. He often won praise from everyone with his unique couplets. Someone came up with this sentence:

Cloudless water drips from the ice-cold eaves

Zhang Shan is often known for his quick thinking. In the past, he was right and his answers were fluent. Faced with this sentence, he could not answer it smoothly. I was exhausted, thinking hard, and even closed the door to thank guests, which made me fascinated.

Because he was in a dull mood, he decided to go out to relax, so he wandered in the fields in a daze. Unexpectedly, God was not good at it. In an instant, dust flew up, sand and rocks flew, and Zhang Shan's face was so beaten that his face was burning. However, the wind and sand made him sober. He suddenly jumped up, ecstatic, and hurried back to tell each other. He had a second line:

The dust is flying in the wind and the smoke of water is rising

p>

It is a short sentence of only ten words, but it tells the cause and effect of frozen and cloudless water, and when the two phrases are connected together, another artistic conception is created. The phenomenon of water dripping from the eaves alone encompasses many phenomena in nature and is quite understandable. Zhang Shan started to work behind closed doors, but finally couldn't get it right. Occasionally, he was inspired by nature, and only then did he see things into thoughts and make perfect connections.

4. The woodcutter's wonderful couplet to Qianlong

One year, Emperor Qianlong paid a private visit to the north of Saibei incognito. It was early spring in March, and the grass in the south of the Yangtze River was already green, but the snow and ice in the north of the Great Wall had just melted away. Looking at the mountains dotted with lingering snow, Qianlong uttered a couplet:

The snow has melted into the mountains, revealing their bones;

After listening, the two accompanying bachelors looked at each other, scratching their heads and ears anxiously.

Suddenly I heard someone behind me say loudly:

The river is boiling and the water is peeling off the skin.

Qianlong turned around and saw an old man carrying a load of firewood on his shoulders and an ax tucked at his waist.

Qianlong thought to himself: This old man doesn’t look like much, but his writing and thinking are quick. I don’t know how capable he is. Let me give him a try. When he saw a bridge in front of him, he casually chanted:

The bridge spans the clear stream and connects the north and the south;

The old man responded casually:

The cave passes through the high mountains and is smooth. thing.

Qianlong published another first couplet:

The real dragon in the dragon painting on the wall is Qianlong (Long);

The first couplet cleverly uses "龙" "Character. The dragon is an auspicious thing, the emperor's intention, the only one in the world, and the end of it is embedded with Qianlong's own reign name, which can be said to be a difficult couplet.

Unexpectedly, the old man glanced at Qianlong and said:

Pure Land Buddha, Golden Body Buddha and Living Buddha are my Buddhas.

After Qianlong heard this, he secretly admired him and decided to test the old man again. So, another couplet came out:

No Buddha statue is left on a non-famous mountain;

Immediately, he lifted up his gown and crossed the bridge. The old man walked onto the bridge carrying a load of firewood, pointed to the water under the bridge and said:

This is the holy water that always surrounds the fairyland.

After the old man finished speaking, he happily walked across the bridge carrying a load of firewood.

This was the first time Qianlong had crossed this kind of single-plank bridge with a ditch sandwiched between two mountains. While wiping his sweat with a handkerchief, he said happily:

There are auspicious clouds under your feet. You should bring your clothes with you when you come here. A bit of fairy spirit;

Hearing the sound, the old man put down his burden and came over to bow to Qianlong;

There are no worldly obstacles in front of him, so he should feel a little auspicious after sitting still.

The old man said yes, picked up the burden and went on his way.

Qianlong looked at the old man's retreating back and said with emotion: "I didn't expect that a mountain woodcutter could also make a wonderful couplet. It's really hard to tell what a person looks like!"

5. Wen and Wu Miao Dui

Ming Dynasty writer Yang Shen, courtesy name Yongxiu, nicknamed Sheng'an, was born in Xindu, Sichuan. He was a Zhengde Jinshi and was awarded the Hanlin Compilation and Compilation. In the third year of Jiajing, he was called a Hanlin Bachelor. , he offended Shizong with his "great gift" proposal, was imprisoned, and was relegated to Yongchang Wei. Yang Shen was well-known for his poems and essays when he was young, including the poem "Sheng'an Collection" and the collection of Sanqu "Tao Qing Yuefu".

It is said that during the Zhengde period, after Yang Sheng'an won the first prize in the imperial examination, he took a boat back home to visit his relatives. When he came to a narrow place in the river, he happened to encounter the boat of Wu Zhuangyuan coming here. Both sides competed with each other in order to raise their own status, and as a result, neither side was able to move forward. For this reason, the two sides had a dispute. Wu Zhuangyuan said to Yang, you are the literary champion, so you must be good at couplets. I am a martial artist, so I will write a first couplet. If you come up against me, I will follow your boat. If you can't stand up to me, you have to let me go first. Yang Shen was proud of his literary talent and agreed to the other party's proposal immediately. So Wu Zhuangyuan wrote the first couplet:

The two boats were running parallel, and the oars were not as fast as the sails;

This couplet was beyond Yang Sheng'an's expectation. Wu Zhuangyuan cleverly used homophones to refer to both objects and things. On people. "Oar speed" is used to refer to "Lu Su", a famous official in the Eastern Wu Dynasty during the Three Kingdoms period, and "fan Kuai" is used to refer to "Fan Kuai", a famous general in the early Western Han Dynasty, which means "literacy is not as good as military force". Yang Sheng'an was unable to find a couplet for a while, so he had to let his boat follow Wu Zhuangyuan.

This became a big regret for Yang Sheng'an, and he still felt about it until his son got married. When his son and daughter-in-law paid homage to the church and the drums and drums sounded, he also shouted happily. The couplet that had troubled him for many years was finally revealed.
