When it comes to the shoddy fill-in-the-blank reference books on the market, he is very disapproving. "I also carefully compiled a book with three years of teaching experience. Those authors have never studied the topic as deeply as I have, so they will make it up and then rush to publish it to cheat money. I can be said to be an expert in this field. The teacher of New Oriental always takes the correct answer first and then analyzes and explains it, but his work is obviously the same, so as to explain why he can always give you the correct answer with wrong analytical reasoning. In addition, I found that all third-rate dictionaries, including English-Chinese dictionaries, explain the answer that charter claimed to find in the last of the 25 definitions in Webster's third unabridged new international dictionary, "A charter issued by a monarch or legislature to a city or university to stipulate its privileges and purposes", so I bought Webster's third edition, weighing more than ten kilograms, and found that there were only 13 definitions, and now his fill-in-the-blank tutorial is in my hand. Translating these sentences is a task beyond my original preparation plan, and the reason why I finally have to do this work is two "terrible" textbooks by Qian Kunqiang and Chen Shengyuan. Needless to say, there is something wrong with Qian Kunqiang's book language. Although I firmly believe that his English level is much higher than mine (perhaps it should be said that he is proficient), theoretically, if a person can't master his mother tongue well (that is, he is not sensitive to the language itself), then he certainly can't master any other language. Even if he can skillfully use it, he is not suitable for language work, such as text translation. His super-fill-in-the-blank course has been sold in the basement of New Oriental for two years, but it has not been officially published, which shows the standard of this book to some extent. As for Chen Shengyuan, who I like very much, he said in the preface of the book: "When translating, try to reflect the structure of the original text, so that candidates can understand the characteristics of the original sentence structure in comparison with the original text, so as to understand the relationship between the structure and the design of answer options ... This will make the sentence a little Europeanized and unnatural ... instead of applying seemingly gorgeous but specious idioms."

As a textbook for exam-oriented learning, his declared translation principles and purposes are very good, but unfortunately, what I see is not only Europeanization or unnatural problems. First of all, "reflecting the structure of the original text" should mean that every sentence component in the original text acts as the same component in the translation to the maximum extent after being translated into Chinese, instead of translating all components into corresponding Chinese words without changing their positions. What is the difference between this practice and the translation results of inferior software such as Kingsoft Express? In fact, the translation of Kingsoft Express translation software is nonsense, but even if we can't see the original text, we can get a general idea of what it wants to say by guessing, just like people who haven't studied Japanese in China can vaguely guess the general meaning by looking at the Chinese characters mixed in the instructions of Japanese electrical appliances. Chen Shengshen's translation is essentially such a thing, of course, there are some differences in degree

Actually, Europeanization is not terrible, especially in a study textbook. Even in literature, some vicious Europeanization has become an integral part of today's modern vernacular. Chen Shengyuan's translation is not Europeanization at all. His translation is the same as Qian Kunqiang's. The most terrible and incredible thing is that, as a so-called translator, no one in China knows what these sentences are saying without the comparison of the original text. I mean, no one can understand what these sentences are literally saying, not because the meaning of the sentences is obscure.

In addition, many sentences you can understand have been turned wrong again. Even if you don't understand the meaning of the sentence, it really doesn't affect the choice of the correct answer. However, as a teaching reference book, how can you convince students if the reference translations are all turned wrong? Unless it is in an abnormal way, such as "Mr. Chen's translations are all wrong, but his GRE score is so high that it can be seen that it is helpful to answer the questions without understanding the sentences."

My translation embodies the following principles. First of all, since it is not a literary translation, I pay attention to making the best use of the structure of the original text, so that the sentence elements in the translation can act as the corresponding elements in the original text as much as possible. For this kind of correspondence, sometimes there will be some sentence structures that do not conform to Chinese habits. For example, some attributive clauses that can be put in English, after being put in front of the modified object according to Chinese grammar, make the sentences look bloated, which may also lead to difficulties in sentence breaking. In order to solve this problem, I use a lot of brackets and dashes in this kind of sentences. Many times, if I only read what is outside the brackets, I will read the whole sentence trunk, and all the modifiers that complicate the sentence structure are in brackets. But if I assume that these brackets don't exist, reading them together is also a smooth and complete sentence with no linguistic defects, so that when reading with the original, the corresponding components can be clearly distinguished from the main structure of the original sentence.

(Note: Due to reading needs, a large number of examples of modifying Luo Yonghao were deleted. I found a doctor with good English to read these examples, and he said the level was quite high. )

I corrected all the imprecise problems in Chen Shengyuan's book. Incredibly, there are as many as 30% of these imprecise mistakes in his book. My draft has many advantages. Although I have finished these advantages, I don't want to waste too much time explaining to others that "my work is awesome …", so I don't want to analyze it any more. If we all accept the assumption that there is no perfect thing, then what I want to say is that my fill-in-the-blank textbook is the closest to perfection. I hope my frankness won't spoil your appetite. Of course I know how open-minded New Oriental is in speaking like this.

If the only criterion for publishing reference books in New Oriental is the quality of books, and other factors are not weighed, then the life of Chen Shengyuan's book will not and should not exceed one year. I need to declare that the effect may not be ideal. I didn't mean to attack Chen Shengyuan. He said in class that one advantage of colleagues in New Oriental is that they don't undermine each other. Maybe they don't have intimate friends, but they don't slander each other, which has played a positive role in their career or life success. Although this view is not in my nature, I also know that if we were all scholars, New Oriental would not be today. So I accepted his point of view. Based on this, I don't want to attack him again. To a large extent, my opinion of him is now frank because he has left and there is no problem getting along with him. In addition, I admire his excellent sense of humor and excellent affinity. After all, he is my favorite teacher in New Oriental (if not the only one). I feel even more sorry for his work and academic attitude.

Of course, I know some young teachers will disdainfully say, what the hell is it to teach GRE? Okay, then.

I think I may look like a monster. After graduating from high school, I dare not take the math test and want to be a teacher. But I didn't come to New Oriental to apply for a teacher. I am here to be an excellent teacher, so I am not suitable for common sense judgment. Even though the reputation and salary of New Oriental make it never lack of teachers, I know that there will never be too many excellent teachers. If New Oriental never lacks excellent teachers, then I also know that better teachers will always be urgently needed by New Oriental.

Gong Zizhen advised Heaven to "drop talents without sticking to one pattern". If the result of "eclectic decline" is abnormal talents with serious imbalance in all aspects of health, although it is far from comprehensive, who will advise New Oriental to "use talents in an eclectic way"?
