Natsume Sosuke (1867- 19 16) was originally named Kinnosuke. Influenced by China culture in his early years, he studied at Imperial University in Tokyo. His poems and essays are collected in the Records of Wood Chips. From 65438 to 0900, he went to study in England and devoted himself to the study of literary theory. After the results came out, he compiled two books, literary theory and literary criticism. 1903 returned to China and started literary creation while teaching. The publication of the novel I'm a Cat (1905) made him famous. Natsume wrote more than ten novellas, as well as many poems, essays, reviews and short stories, which reflected a wide range of life and various styles.
The novella Brothers (1906) criticized the corruption and darkness in the field of education, while the short stories One Hundred and Twenty Days and Storm lashed out at the "civilization" since Meiji. The novels Sanshiro (1908), What Happened Later (1909) and Door (19 10) constitute a trilogy describing the life of intellectuals. Through the disillusionment of Saburo who witnessed the educational ills from the mountain village to Tokyo, the novel helps families who are dissatisfied with officials and businessmen but can't get rid of their dependence on their families, and the pursuit of free love can't bear the pain of social pressure, supports the pessimistic disappointment of pursuing personal freedom and happiness, and describes the dreams, pursuits and failures of intellectuals in Meiji period. This novel describes the inner activities of intellectuals in a delicate and profound way.
Natsume Soseki pays attention to the lower class, satirizes egoism and attacks the bad habits of the times. At the same time, he often shows an aestheticism tendency in his works. The novella Boarding (1906) depicts an extraordinary and beautiful world through the painter's eyes. It is as romantic, lyrical and dreamy as The Tower of London, Phantom Shield and One Night. Works describing Xanadu, like novels with strong critical spirit, are actually a reflection of the writer's dissatisfaction with the dark reality.
In his later years, he wrote Trilogy after the Equinox (19 12), Pedestrian and Heart, autobiographical novel Grass by the Road (19 15) and unfinished novel Light and Shadow. Different from the humor in I'm a Cat and the seriousness in Sanshiro, these works are good at analyzing the characters' hearts, with a low tone and dignified and powerful brushwork.
I am a Cat is Natsume Sasaki's masterpiece. The protagonist of the novel is a cat, and the story is told by the cat in the first person "I" without complete clues. In the seemingly casual expression of what cats see, hear and feel, the serious theme is clearly displayed.
Misha, the owner of this cat, is a middle school teacher. He likes quiet and often works hard at home. He has a wide range of interests, but he has accomplished nothing. The host often stays with friends-Fan Guan, an aesthete; John, a Bachelor of Science; Dongfeng, an artist; and Du Xian, a philosopher. One day, the wife of capitalist Jintian came to the door and asked Kumisha to help her daughter's marriage. Misha thought it was a joke that John would fall in love with Miss Jintian's house, so he mocked her with a pavilion. Since then, host families have caused a lot of trouble. First, the driver's wife spread gossip, coaxing and insulting the owner; Later, Suzuki, an old classmate of the master, came to the door and advised the master to make less trouble; Second, middle school students were instigated to the host's house to make noise, which made the host very angry. The cat came to Jintian's house, heard the discussion of Jintian and his wife, and knew that they were fooling their master.
The host still got together with a group of friends, such as Fan Ting and John, and attacked the world in their conversation and ridicule, condemning the abomination of capitalists and the meanness of detective lackeys. The host has a student, Sanping, who is going to marry Miss Jintian. He came to invite his master to the wedding, but he flatly refused. Cats are also boring in their owners' homes. "The final fate of mankind is nothing more than suicide", and the master's statement is probably right. The drunken cat thought, accidentally fell into the water tank and died in the struggle.
Around Miss Jintian's marriage, her works strongly criticized the arrogance of the bourgeoisie and the snobbery of money worshippers. Jintian planned to "surrender" Kumisha in the end, because Kumisha neglected his wife. The reason why he is so fearless and has the ability to make people "live and die" is because he has deep pockets. Suzuki fawned on Jintian in every way and kowtowed to others, becoming a spy and lobbyist of Jintian. The reason is also money. Even the cat saw it. "I understand now that it is really money that makes everything in the world move." No one can fully understand the function of money and exert its power except capitalists. "The work criticizes the' worst human being' who has no sense, no human feelings and no sense of shame, such as' nose and eyes are fixed on banknotes' and' anything can be done as long as you can make money'.
Through the cat's eyes, Misha's stubbornness, Leng Yue's indifference to fashion, the cynicism of the pavilion, the "complete enlightenment" of the unique immortal, and even Suzuki's selfishness and snobbery are highlighted. The bitter Misha people's laughing and cursing contain ridicule of the money worship society and hatred of militaristic violence such as police detectives, which shows the quality that honest intellectuals are unwilling to collude with powerful people. At the same time, the works also criticize and ridicule the weaknesses of the bitter Misha people, such as lack of ambition, idleness, narcissism and artificial elegance, but this is a "bitter aftertaste", which contains the author's own sympathy, depression and sorrow. The works successfully shaped the group image of middle and lower intellectuals in Meiji era in Japan who were dissatisfied with the current social situation but unable to communicate with the people.
The novel has a unique form, with the cat as the protagonist and the cat's life as the narrative framework (from the time I was born and lived in Misha's miserable family to the time I accidentally drank beer and fell into the water tank and drowned), which is novel, unique, fluent and vivid. The cat's argument seems rambling, but it's actually very rambling. Cats not only play the role of narration, but also play the role of explanation and connect stories. The unique concept has formed a unique charm. The humor and satire in the novel language can also show the influence of Japanese humorous literature and British satirical novels.
