What does sensationalism mean?

Grandstanding, idiom, pronounced huá zhòng qǔ chǒng, means to cater to the masses with exaggerated words and deeds and deceive the trust and support of the masses. From Ban Gu's "Hanshu·Yiwenzhi" of the Eastern Han Dynasty, the original sentence is "However, those who confuse lose the subtlety, while those who pioneer will always suppress it, go against the original Tao, and only try to impress the public."

Interpretation: However, confused people have lost their profoundness and subtlety, and their enlightenment follows praise or belittlement, leaving the foundation of the Tao, casually catering to the public, and defrauding trust and support.

Extended information:

"Hanshu·Yiwenzhi" is the earliest catalog of historical records in China and is one of the ten records of "Hanshu". When Ban Gu of the Eastern Han Dynasty wrote the "Book of Han", it was adapted from the "Qilue" to record the prosperity of the book collection in the Western Han Dynasty. It is divided into six categories: Six Arts, Scholars, Poems, Military Books, Numeracy, and Fang Techniques. It contains 38 kinds of books, 596 books, and 13,269 volumes. Ban Gu claimed that he had "deleted the essentials of Qilue to prepare for the chapters" and compiled "Hanshu·Yiwenzhi".

The specific approach is:

①Retain the classification system of 6 strategies and 38 types in "Seven Strategies".

② Newly added "Seven Strategies" were written by Liu Xiang, Yang Xiong, and Du Lin in the late Western Han Dynasty.

③The books recorded in "Qilue" are basically preserved according to their original condition, but the duplicated and inappropriate classifications are appropriately merged or moved. Under the total number of books, the number of "out" and the number of articles are indicated; for books omitted due to duplication, the number of "province" and the number of articles are indicated; for all books added or moved in, the number of "in" is indicated. Home, several articles.

④ Attach the contents of the "Compilation" in "Qi Lue" to the various contents except "Six Lue" and "Poetry and Fu Lue"; ⑤ Delete the abstracts of each book in "Qi Lue", Take notes when necessary (see "Bielu" and "Qilue").

"Hanshu·Yiwenzhi" created a precedent for the catalog of historical records. After the Han Dynasty, many historical books followed its example and compiled art and literature records or classics records.

Since "Qilue" has been lost, "Hanshu Yiwenzhi" has become the earliest existing book catalog in China. Wang Yinglin in the Song Dynasty wrote 10 volumes of "Critical Research on the Art and Literature of Han Scrolls", and Yao Zhenzong in the Qing Dynasty wrote 6 volumes of "Supplement to the Art and Literature of Han Scrolls" and 8 volumes of "Lectures on the Art and Literature of Han Scrolls".
