The story of a million-dollar bill

I saw a film "Million Pounds" which was shot on 1953 and adapted from Mark Twain's novel "Million Pounds". This ironic film left a deep impression on me.

The story originated from two rich brothers. They took out a banknote with a face value of100000 pounds from the bank, hoping to verify the outcome of a poor man getting this huge banknote, provided that he could not use the cheque and had to return it one month later. My brother thinks that this bill is worthless to a poor man, and eventually he will be down and out; My brother thinks he will get out of trouble and get everything because of this bill. In order to prove the correctness of their respective theories, the two brothers made a bet on this. They left this bill to henry adams, a poor American boy, and traveled abroad by himself, leaving Henry confused about the future. But to Henry's surprise, people tried their best to win over this rare rich man who suddenly became rich. From free meals, free clothes to free accommodation, they try their best to please him like beggars and constantly improve his social status. Not only that, at the end of the story, the lucky young man got a good wife and 30 thousand pounds of bank interest, and lived a very happy life from then on.

Seeing this, everyone may have different ideas, but it must be admitted that this is a very interesting question. How tempting is a million-pound cheque that can't be used, and people can compete to provide services for one person for free. Ironically, at the climax of the film, this check was lost. People no longer seem to know and trust Henry, and they don't care what he said, only care whether he still has this million-dollar check. It seems that this check is the real henry adams, and the free service provided by others is only for this check, not for people.

People act for money and are driven by it. A single bill can cause a storm in the city, all caused by people's snobbery. In the wave of the times at that time, people were blinded by power and money and lost their original beliefs and self.

But at the same time, from the protagonist's point of view, this is an opportunity to use this snobbery of money to successfully create a new world for himself. We can also see how capital realizes interest rolling.

I have to say that Mark Twain's satire is quite vivid, interesting and sharp. Of course, it is even more ironic that even though this novel has been published for a hundred years, this million-dollar bill still exists in the world and is accepted contemptuously by the world.
