Why do people think that the political reform in the late Qing Dynasty was insincere?

When it comes to Whip Finger Lane, we must mention the "No.1 Scholar's Mansion" on this street. Zhuangyuanfu is located in the alley on the west side of Beitou Road. According to the old man in the street, there used to be three courtyards in Zhuangyuan House, No.9, 1 1, 13. Later, the old house was rebuilt, and 13 was demolished and a building was built in its place. From the two remaining gates, No.9 Courtyard and 1 1 Courtyard, we can still see the elegance and glory of the Champion House. These ancient buildings are the residence of Chen Mian, a young scholar in the late Qing Dynasty.

Chen Mian (1859- 1853) is the best, and he has been brilliant since he was a child. 14 years old is a scholar, 17 years old is a juren. 24-year-old, at the end of Guangxu reign in Qing Dynasty (1883), won the first prize in one fell swoop, being the youngest winner of the first prize. The current No.9 Courtyard, 1 1, is called the No.1 Scholar's Mansion because the place where Chen Mian lived in that year won the top prize. It is said that there is a plaque of "No.1 Scholar" and "Tu Jinda" given by Guangxu at Gate 9, which was preserved after liberation and later destroyed. No.9 Courtyard and 1 1 Courtyard are similar in structural layout, with a hall with an aisle in the middle, which divides the courtyards into two courtyards. I just felt cramped and cramped when I first entered the No.9 compound, which was far less transparent and spacious than 1 1. Last time I went, a middle-aged man living in the backyard took me to the backyard with enthusiasm. It turned out that the door of the hall in the yard was blocked, so we could only enter the backyard through a narrow passage at the southern end of the hall. The whole yard has been used as a dormitory by a unit for a long time. People can only see from the small blue bricks, mottled eaves gallery columns and beautifully carved stilts that this complex turned out to be an old house of more than a hundred years. The enthusiastic middle-aged man introduced me to his room and told me that the carved wooden partition in the original room was wrapped in lime partition. Moreover, he introduced the seven beams and eight columns of the room, the moisture-proof structure of the ground, the wardrobe hidden in the wall and so on, which really touched me.

When Shenqian Street was widened in 2007, the east side of Whip Finger Lane had been razed to the ground. Walking on this street, it seems that you can always hear the panic and helpless sigh of the west half of the street facing death threats! Zhuangyuanfu, an ancient community bearing the cultural and historical connotation of old Jinan, is said to be listed as an object of construction protection, which is gratifying. It's just that the fate of Whipple Lane is uncertain. Even if it is preserved, it can only be called "the remaining whip refers to the alley."
