Is the black tadpole a frog or a toad?

Frog tadpoles are blue-gray, with a slightly round body and a long, striped tail. The mouth is located at the front end of the head and often moves alone and dispersedly in the water. Toad tadpoles are slightly oval, with a short tail and dark body color, but the tail is lighter than the body, and the mouth is facing down at the front end, close to the abdomen.

Difference between frog tadpoles and toad tadpoles

First of all, look at the time of appearance. Generally, a large number of tadpoles that appear around Tomb-Sweeping Day are toad tadpoles, and tadpoles seen in February and March are often black. Frog tadpoles are relatively late and usually appear when there is water in rice fields in early summer.

Second, look at the color. Frog tadpoles are bluish gray and light in color, while toad tadpoles are black.

Third, see if there are any groups. Frog tadpoles often move separately in the water, while toad tadpoles like to get together.
