Cat sterilization.

Do you think so about sterilization?

-Be responsible for the cat and sterilize it!

Text: Little Sister.

I think it's cruel to sterilize cats.

Every year, many cats are abandoned by their owners for various reasons, and most of them will die tragically ... What is really cruel is that they are irresponsible for their lives and create a batch of abandoned stray cats.

In addition, unsterilized cats will induce breast tumors due to frequent estrus, until they become cancerous, which will seriously damage the health of cats.

Sterilizing a cat is not only responsible for the cat itself, but also for life. It is true to respect the right to life, but please also pay attention to the quality of life!

I don't let my cat go out, so I don't have to be neutered.

Frequent estrus will make cats fidgety and nervous, which will cause problems such as loss of appetite, weight loss and dull coat color, and even cause reproductive system diseases of cats. Therefore, even if cats are not allowed to have children, it will be harmful to the health of cats if they are in estrus frequently.

I can stand the cat's performance in estrus and don't want to operate on it.

You and your family may tolerate cats urinating everywhere because of estrus, howling loudly in the middle of the night, or destroying furniture. But at the same time, cats will become moody and aggressive because of estrus, and their appetite will be good and bad, which is also very distressing for cats themselves, and it is easy to cause hasty transfer to cats. It is not uncommon to get lost when you want to go out in estrus.

I want to give my cat a complete life, and I don't want it to be mutilated by sterilization.

The estrus behavior of cats is completely a physiological response to the changes of hormone levels in the body after sexual maturity, and it is a physiological requirement for the purpose of reproducing offspring, which is very different from human understanding of sexual behavior. If a pair of healthy and fertile cats are allowed to breed at will, the number of cats will increase geometrically. In seven years, she and her offspring will have 300,000 cats. Without enough families to feed these cats, many cats will die tragically. Therefore, after measuring many factors that affect the healthy survival of cats, it is most important to create a stable and healthy living environment for babies!

I'm worried that sterilization will affect the health of my cat.

Frequent estrus in cats will cause reproductive system diseases, female cats will have ovarian, uterine and breast lesions, and male cats are prone to genital and urinary tract problems. Sterilization fundamentally reduces the health risks of cats and greatly reduces the chances of developing reproductive system diseases. Moreover, sterilization makes the cat get rid of the tension, irritability and loss of appetite caused by estrus, making it easier to keep the cat healthy.

I want to give birth to my cat before sterilization.

A cute newborn kitten will grow into a big cat in a blink of an eye and will live for at least ten years in the future. Taking care of them is no small responsibility! Even if kittens have a reliable home, if they are not sterilized, more kittens with uncertain future will be born soon. Cats should be operated as soon as possible. There is no scientific basis for having children before sterilization, and it is not good for the health of cats.

My cat is too young to consider sterilization.

When the cat is sexually mature, you can consider sterilization. Generally speaking, 6-8 months is the best period for cat sterilization. Keeping a cat as soon as possible has the advantages of quick recovery and low risk of illness. Many parents of neutered cats report that cats neutered earlier tend to remain innocent and happy.

It is said that sterilization is very harmful to cats.

Sterilization is a surgical method to remove the ovaries of female cats (the uterus may also be removed for a given female cat to reduce the hidden danger of pathological changes) or the testicles of male cats. The sterilization of cats is carried out under anesthesia. Sterilization is successful, and the postoperative recovery is fast, which will not bring any harm to the health of cats.

There is no time to take care of cats after sterilization.

It only takes a few minutes for the male cat to be sterilized, and only half an hour for the female cat to be discharged after the operation. Generally, after 1-2 days of recovery, cats can take care of themselves (male cats can recover on the same day). After 5-7 days, after the cat is fully recovered, you can share a good life with it.

So as the owner, you only need 1-2 days to monitor cat sterilization. It's a good choice to take the cat for surgery on weekends.

It is said that cats can take medicine for contraception.

At present, there is no contraceptive drug specially developed for cats. Sterilization is the best method recommended by veterinarians all over the world.

It is very wrong to feed cats with human contraceptives. Hormones in drugs will greatly interfere with the hormone balance in cats, and frequent use will cause great adverse reactions, even tumors.

I'm afraid sterilization will make cats fat.

There is no scientific survey data showing that sterilization will make cats fat. The only way to make cats fat is overeating and lack of exercise. Therefore, it will be healthier for cats to maintain a normal life (reasonable diet and exercise) after sterilization.

I'm worried that sterilization will change the cat's personality.

Sterilization has no effect on the cat's personality. Sterilized cats can effectively control inappropriate behaviors (such as dividing territory with urine and howling all night). ), other behaviors are no different from those of unsterilized cats.

I'm worried that the sterilized cat will be bullied by other cats.

After sterilization, the cat will get rid of irritability and tension, restore its previous peaceful personality, get along more easily and fight less.

My cat is too old to be sterilized.

Choose regular animal hospitals and skilled veterinarians, and all cats of school age up to 10 can be sterilized.

Operating time

A) physiology:

In principle, it is ideal to operate after the cat is mature and estrus once. At this stage, the cat's reproduction and corresponding organs have matured. Premature operation can easily lead to reproductive and secret urine diseases such as urinary calculi.

Avoiding surgery during estrus is easy to cause massive bleeding.

In order to prevent cats from disturbing people in estrus night, you can feed chlorpheniramine once at around 6 pm. Be careful not to take medicine continuously for more than 3 days. Any medicine has side effects on cats, and medication is not a long-term solution. On the one hand, the effect is not obvious, on the other hand, cats are not satisfied for a long time and are in a depressed state, which will cause hormone secretion disorder, leading to reproductive diseases and even cancer.

Female cats should not consider surgery until they are healthy (at least one month after delivery).

B) time:

Eight months after the female cat and nine months after the male cat (there is a big difference between different kinds of cats in the morning and evening. Generally speaking, Asian varieties are earlier than other varieties, and short-haired varieties are earlier than long-haired varieties.

Before operation

A) vaccines:

You must be healthy and vaccinated (see the relationship between sterilization and vaccination for details).

B) electrical appliances:

1, containers such as large cartons can let at least one lying cat go.

2, a clean cotton mattress, flapping under the box, can make the cat lie very comfortable after surgery. (For disinfection, you can soak the washed mattress in dripping dew or 84 solution, and then irradiate it with strong light for more than 1 hour. )

3. A clean quilt. Due to the operation itself and the efficacy of anesthetic, the cat's body temperature is very low after operation, and its body's ability to keep out the cold decreases, so it is necessary to keep the cat warm.

4. Eye drops. Eye drops for ordinary people (such as chloramphenicol eye drops). After being anesthetized, cats can't close their eyes, and the glass will lose water when exposed to the air for a long time. You can even see that the cat's eyes used to be bright and big, and there would be depressions like walnut skins. Therefore, from the end of the operation, the cat must be given eye drops in time until she regains consciousness.

C) Fasting, water prohibition and cleaning:

General anesthesia for sterilization, especially for female cats, will be more thorough.

The anesthetic commonly used by veterinarians is basically an injection called 846 mixture, which has been eliminated by doctors because of its strong reaction. This is probably a consideration for the profit of the pet hospital. In this way, cats are prone to vomit after anesthesia, and the vomiting at this time is completely unconscious, and the body will not make corresponding adjustment and protection measures, which is very likely to cause vomit to block the throat and nasal cavity, thus leading to suffocation of cats.

So 24 hours before surgery (at least 10 hour) fasting, only water supply. Four hours before the operation, no water.

Preoperative fasting can not only reduce the risk of cats after anesthesia, but also promote cats to restore their appetite and eat as soon as possible after surgery. In order to keep cats healthy even if they fast for a day, we must take good care of their lives and strive to lay a solid foundation for them.

You can bathe the cat two days before the operation. Be sure to use warm water for a short time, dry it as soon as possible after washing, and be careful not to catch cold. Because cats should not take a bath for at least one month after operation, so as to avoid wound inflammation or catching a cold due to decreased body resistance (cats and dogs are different, especially they are not used to taking a bath, especially the skin will naturally secrete a kind of oil to clean their fur and maintain their health. Frequent bathing will destroy this function of cats. Therefore, if the cat is kept indoors for a long time, it is not very dirty and does not need to take a bath at all, especially when the temperature is low in autumn and winter.

D) weighing:

It's best to weigh the cat at home. In this way, the cat is more relaxed and more accurate. The weight of the cat is the absolute basis for doctors to judge the amount of anesthetic injected into the cat. Almost half of the risk of surgery comes from the control of anesthetic dosage. A little more anesthetic will directly lead to the cat's coma for too long, brain and nerve damage, and even euthanasia. So weighing is very important.

Try to choose accurate weighing equipment. If not, you can choose an ordinary spring scale in the supermarket. The lower the maximum weight that can be weighed, the more accurate it is. If you want to know whether the spring scale is accurate, you can choose some items of 0.25kg, 0.5kg, 1kg, 2kg and 3kg in the supermarket in advance to weigh and check them respectively.

It's best to put the cat in a container before leaving for the hospital, so that it can be weighed conveniently. Let the cat be as quiet as possible and read the value when the pointer is relatively static. Then weigh the container and subtract the two values to get the weight of the cat.

During the operation

Introduce the general process of the operation, so that everyone can have a good idea and make the postoperative care more targeted.

A) the operation itself:

Male cat: the scrotum is cut vertically, and the testis is removed together with part of the vas deferens.

Female cat: open the abdominal cavity and remove the ovary, fallopian tube and part of the uterus.

B) General process:

1. Weighing: If you have weighed it at home, tell the doctor.

2. Inject anesthetic: The cat will lose consciousness within 1-3 minutes.

Pay attention to let the cat lie prone in a normal posture, don't lean back, keep the head naturally low, and avoid the tongue from contracting and blocking the throat. Holding her, talking to her gently and giving encouragement can reduce her panic and helplessness.

Some cats will struggle before the anesthetic takes effect, so pay attention to protection to avoid falling, bumping or other accidents.

Don't be nervous if the cat vomits. You can clean the cat's mouth with a cotton swab in time to check whether the throat and nasal cavity are unobstructed.

3, injection of antibiotics: when the cat is about to coma, the doctor will inject antibiotics into the cat to prevent postoperative wound infection.

4, into the operating room:

Male cats need 15-30 minutes.

The female cat is longer, because the operation is complicated and the wound should be bandaged after the operation. But it should not be more than 50 minutes (it is recommended to consult widely before operation and try to find a doctor with good reputation and rich experience for the cat. Might as well follow the crowd, at least such doctors have more opportunities for surgery and more skills).

postoperative care

A) take the cat home;

Don't try to take the cat that has just had surgery away from the vet. Their posture of holding a cat is specially trained. All you have to do is open the box prepared in advance and let the veterinarian put the cat flat. Gently cover the cat with a quilt. Pay attention to give up the head and keep the cat breathing smoothly.

Give the cat eye drops in time, one drop every 2 minutes or so, or extend/shorten the interval appropriately according to the cat's dry eyes.

If you like, you can check the cat's mouth, pull out the cat's tongue and clean up the mucus in the mouth, so that the cat's mouth can be kept half open for breathing.

You can also put a small folded towel under the cat's shoulder to make the cat's head droop slightly, so as to prevent mucus (or vomit) in the cat's mouth from flowing down the throat and obstructing breathing. This posture is called recovery posture.

You can gently hold the cat's paw with your hand, and her paw will be very cold at this time.

Be sure to avoid collision, shaking and moving the cat without authorization, and try to let the cat sleep for a while under the control of anesthetic. Because it will be very painful after waking up (I personally object to the so-called wake-up needle after surgery, which is not conducive to the recovery of cats).

B) From postoperative to recovery:

This stage lasts about 3-5 hours. According to the physical quality of cats, cats with good health wake up faster. Some cats wake up an hour after the operation, while others sleep all day. What can we do when the cat is asleep?

1. Place the cat box in a quiet and warm place to avoid sunlight. Stand by and never leave.

2. Keep dropping eye drops and wipe them with cotton wool.

3. Pay attention to the cat's breathing, pulse and temperature. In case of serious abnormality, contact the veterinary hospital in time (cat's pulse: 160-240 beats/min, temperature: 38-39, breathing: 20-30 beats/min).

4, pay attention to heat preservation, if it is a low temperature season, you can put a warm water bag in the cat box. Pay attention to keep the room ventilated and dry, but be sure to avoid the wind blowing directly on the cat.

C) Within 2 hours after waking up:

1. Precursor of Awakening: The limbs occasionally tremble like dreams, and the eyes begin to turn slowly, trying to close their eyes slowly many times. Once these actions are taken, it proves that the cat is going to wake up.

2. Wake up: Some cats will stagger once they wake up. At this time, the anesthetic has not been completely exhausted, and the cat has been unconscious. Be sure to follow her and pay close attention to avoid bumps and injuries and cats jumping with brute force, especially female cats, which may lead to abdominal ligation and massive bleeding.

Some cats will wake up and sleep for a long time. As long as their temperature, pulse and breathing are normal, there will be no problem.

The male cat will urinate in the back row after waking up, which is very big. And because of the anesthetic, he often chooses a place where he doesn't urinate at ordinary times to solve the problem, such as a bed or closet. At this time, try not to stop him by threatening, and it is best to prevent and guide him. It should be normal for some cats to get blood and orange urine. Observe the follow-up reaction closely.

Soon after waking up, the mother cat will clash with the gauze skirt wrapped after the operation, licking and tearing. You can use small scissors to cut off the parts that seriously hinder the cat's movement, so as to relieve the cat's discomfort. You can consider wearing Eliza white-collar for cats, but this method is not advisable for cats with bad temper and arrogance. You should try to keep the cat calm after the operation. You can also consider making cotton surgical gowns for cats to protect the incision. Surgical gowns should be breathable and comfortable to avoid incision inflammation.

For the female cat after operation, the most important thing is to ensure that there are no accidents such as infection and injury before stitches are removed. Don't take off the original dressing of the cat in the hospital without authorization, but put the homemade surgical gown on the outside for protection.

Because the ovaries, fallopian tubes and kidneys to be removed by the mother cat are intertwined, once there is any mistake in the operation, the cat will not be able to urinate, and the consequences will be unimaginable. So, when your cat can pee, you can breathe a sigh of relief.

D) postoperative diet:

It is recommended to go to the pet hospital to buy canned formula cats, feed them for 2 days after operation, and then slowly change back to ordinary canned cats and cat food. Reason:

1. There are antibiotics in the special prescription tank after operation, which can prevent postoperative infection. Personally, I don't advocate intravenous drip of antibiotics after operation, and I don't think it is necessary. If properly cared for, cats and those are not easy to get infected. A large number of antibiotics will not only interfere with the cat's own immunity, but also affect the cat's kidney function, leaving hidden dangers.

2. Specially designed for cats with loss of appetite after operation, which can stimulate appetite. Because of the side effects of anesthetics, coupled with the weakness of cats after surgery, it will definitely seriously affect the appetite of cats. Induce the cat to eat, not too much at a time, it is enough for two people to finish eating. It can be heated to body temperature if necessary.

3, balanced nutrition, will not lead to constipation or diarrhea. For cats after operation, especially female cats, constipation must be avoided, and cats can easily cause ligation to fall off when exerting force.

If you can't buy canned formula after the operation, you can make it yourself:

Chicken paste+chicken liver paste+fish paste (beef paste)+eggs (chicken liver must not be big), stir well without any seasoning and steam. Every time the cat is fed (at least twice a day is recommended), add 1/6 tablets of Xianfeng VI 1 tablet of lactase (the drug can be stopped 3 days after operation). Ensure the supply of cat food and water at ordinary times.

take out stitches

Male cat surgery is a minor surgery in vitro, and no stitches are needed. It basically returned to normal 2 days after operation, and there was no suture removal problem.

The female cat was removed at least 7 days after operation (7- 10 day). It's best to go to the hospital to remove stitches so that doctors can check the wound healing.

If it is necessary to remove stitches from the cat at home, prepare the instruments: alcohol lamp, alcohol (70% for medical use), the smallest medical scissors, tweezers, cotton swabs and cotton wool. Specific operation:

Operators will wash their hands (remove the dirt hidden under their nails with a finger brush) and rinse them with running water for 3 times. Immerse in drops (or 84 solution) 10 minute, dry naturally, and don't wipe with a towel. Don't touch anything easily with your hands.

1, ask the assistant to undress the cat after operation.

There should be a stack of rectangular gauze covering the knife edge and fixed on the cat's abdominal skin with adhesive tape (the hair on the cat's abdomen has been removed before operation, and it takes about a month to fully recover to its previous length). Carefully remove this gauze and you can see the cat's knife edge. Generally, sewing is done independently with one stitch, which should be 3-5 stitches. Knots usually lean to one side.

If the wound is found to be red and swollen, there are secretions flowing out, etc. Dip a cotton swab in alcohol and gently rub the wound for 3 times. Repackage. Contact the hospital for treatment in time.

2, cotton swab dipped in alcohol, gently press on the sewing part, slowly wipe rub. Promote the separation of suture from meat.

3. The pointed scissors are sterilized at high temperature on the alcohol lamp. Cut the thread near the knot. The tip of tweezers is sterilized at high temperature on alcohol lamp. Carefully clamp the knot and gently pull out the thread. There should be no bleeding, secretion overflow and other phenomena. When sewing, the tight skin will bounce off slightly, revealing the sewing knife edge and a blood scab. Then gently wipe the wound with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol, especially the thread hole. The action must be light. After 2 days, three times a day, you can wipe the wound with an alcohol cotton swab.

In this way, you successfully saved a big hidden danger for the cat, and the cat's future will be guaranteed with happiness!
