Buddhas and Bodhisattvas lack nothing, so why do they still need offerings from Buddhist disciples?
It is not that Buddhas and Bodhisattvas need offerings from Buddha’s disciples, but that we Buddhist disciples need the opportunity to make offerings to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and we need to make offerings to the Three Jewels of Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha.
Excerpts from Master Xuecheng’s teachings: The Buddha is not a god, but a teacher. All kinds of worship and offerings are not for worshiping idols, but have their own profound connotations - worshiping the Buddha is to subdue one’s own arrogance; burning incense, It is to express inner respect and remind oneself to offer the Three Jewels with the pure incense of precepts and concentration.
Buddhism does not believe that there is an external god that dominates everything, and that people's lives are determined by themselves. By studying Buddhism, you can correctly understand the world and the laws of life, thereby making your life better and better.
If a person wants to be free from suffering, he must make offerings to the Three Jewels and perform meritorious deeds in front of the Three Jewels. What is the temple used for? Don't worry about it, just sow your blessings. You make offerings to the Three Jewels and use your heart to pray for blessings and wisdom in front of the Three Jewels. What does seeking blessing mean? You do meritorious deeds to seek blessings. What is seeking wisdom? You study Buddhism, listen to sutras, chant sutras, recite sutras, and study the dharma to develop wisdom.
Why do ordinary people make offerings to the Three Jewels? What if the Three Jewels don’t support me? Because you are not the Three Jewels, you cannot receive offerings. Why do you want to make offerings to the Three Jewels? Just because the Three Jewels can bring you blessings, if you want to be blessed, you must do merit in front of the Three Jewels. If you don't make offerings to the Three Jewels, no one will make offerings to you when you become a Buddha in the future. Not to mention becoming a Buddha, even if you become a monk and become a monk, no one will support you. Why? Because you did not make offerings to the Three Jewels before becoming a monk at home. Why doesn't anyone support me? Because I rarely made offerings to the Three Jewels before I became a monk, so now that I have become a monk, few people make offerings to me. I often feel ashamed, so now I want to tell everyone this truth, so as not to feel like I have no one to support me.
Making offerings to the Three Jewels is to cultivate blessings and wisdom. To cultivate wisdom, one must preach the Dharma according to the scriptures or do the work of spreading the Dharma. I have said before that we are going to publish a magazine. This is all part of cultivating wisdom. If you want to cultivate wisdom, you must support the work of promoting Buddhism; if you want to cultivate blessings, you must make offerings to the Three Jewels. If you don’t make offerings to the Three Jewels, no one will make offerings to you when you do the Three Jewels in the future. It’s the same sentence as before.
So before you do the Three Jewels, you must support the Three Jewels and make offerings to the Three Jewels to solve the various difficulties of the Three Jewels and cultivate blessings and wisdom. "If you cultivate blessings without cultivating wisdom, an elephant will wear a necklace on his body; if you cultivate wisdom without cultivating blessings, the arhat will receive a poor supply." What's the truth? If you value wisdom but do not cultivate merit, if you succeed in cultivating the Tao and become an Arhat in the future, no one will support you. Someone said: "Last night, the Master said that after sitting for ten days, someone would support you. How come you can achieve Arahantship and no one supports you? What's the point? It's terrible. This Dharma is too dangerous. I won't learn Buddhism anymore!" But if you don't learn Dharma, You won’t become a Buddha. If you want to descend, that’s fine. If you want to become a Buddha, you have a clear understanding of Buddhism - I must strive upward, practice Buddhism diligently, overcome all kinds of difficulties, and move forward in practice!
Practice should cultivate blessings and wisdom! If you don’t cultivate blessings, no one will support you; if you don’t cultivate wisdom, you will become foolish. Buddha is full of blessings and wisdom - when blessings are satisfied, wisdom is also satisfied, so he is called "Two-legged Buddha". As we practice now, we must also cultivate blessings and wisdom. We must cultivate blessings and wisdom everywhere. Don't follow the example of Arhats, who should pay less. If you cultivate wisdom but don't cultivate blessings, you will be an Arhat. If you should pay small amounts, there will be no one to support you. Cultivating blessings without cultivating wisdom is like an elephant hanging a necklace on its body. Although a string of necklaces is hung on the body, although it is beautiful, it is very foolish. Therefore, when we study Buddhism, we should cultivate wisdom and blessings, and we must actually do it, not just talk about it. What is taught is the Dharma, and what is practiced is the Tao. Everyone should know this. The blessings each of us cultivates are not cultivated in one lifetime, but are cultivated over many lifetimes and many kalpas. If you cultivate blessings, the blessings will be more.
