In 20 16, our army established five war zones on the basis of seven war zones, thus ending the era of seven military regions. Therefore, China is divided into five war zones, namely, the eastern war zone, the western war zone, the southern war zone, the northern war zone and the central war zone. Their headquarters are located in five cities: Nanjing, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Shenyang and Beijing, but their jurisdiction is not limited to these places.

The Northern Theater governs and directs the armed forces of Liaoning, Shandong, Jilin, Heilongjiang and Inner Mongolia, with its headquarters in Shenyang and its military organs in Jinan.

The five major war zones refer to the eastern war zone, the southern war zone, the western war zone, the northern war zone and the central war zone. As the only highest joint operational command organization in this strategic direction, the five major war zones perform joint operational command functions in accordance with the requirements of combining peacetime and wartime, normal operation, specialization and high efficiency, and undertake the mission of responding to security threats, maintaining peace, containing wars and winning wars in this strategic direction.

The five military regions play a key role in China's national defense system and are responsible for safeguarding the country's territorial integrity and security.
