2. Zhanqiao

Zhanqiao is located on the southern seaside of the central city of Qingdao. It is a 440-meter-long sea corridor extending from the land into the sea. The trestle bridge was built in the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty (1892) and has a history of a hundred years. It has always been regarded as a symbol of Qingdao. The Huilan Pavilion at the end of the trestle is a witness to Qingdao’s modern history.

The trestle was once a military-only artificial dock in Qingdao. The trestle bridge faces Little Qingdao across the water, and its northern end is connected to the Zhongshan Road Commercial Street in a straight line. There is a triangular breakwater at the end of the trestle bridge, and there is an octagonal pavilion with a national style called Huilan Pavilion. There is a wordless stele in Huilan Pavilion. There are still different opinions on the origin of this stele. Now, the pavilion comprehensively displays Qingdao’s modern history, humanities, folk customs and other unique urban features through themed exhibitions.

There are iron chain guardrails and lotus street lights on both sides of the trestle. Visitors can stroll along the trestle beachfront and watch seagulls flying freely here when the weather is calm. You can step off the trestle and stroll on the beach to catch shells.

Qingdao Railway Station is not far away, and it only takes 10 minutes to walk to the trestle. When you get off the train and walk out of the station hall, you can see the trestle stretching into the sea. The northern end of the Zhanqiao is flanked by Zhanqiao Park.
