History of the Asian Games

The Asian Games evolved from the Far Eastern Games and the West Asian Games hosted by the Far Eastern Sports Association. Among them, the Far Eastern Games were held for 10 times from 1913 to 1934, with 6 countries participating: China, Japan, India, Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam;

The West Asian Games was only held in 1934. It was held once and only four countries, India, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), Afghanistan and Pakistan participated. Because Japan wanted to bring the puppet regime "Manchukuo" into the Games, China firmly opposed and withdrew. The Far East Sports Association was therefore disbanded, and the Games were declared closed after the 10th session.

In 1947, Indian Prime Minister Nehru proposed holding the Asian Games at the "Conference on Asian Relations", which was unanimously approved by the representatives present. On February 13, 1949, the "Asian Games Charter" was signed in New Delhi, India, deciding to hold the Asian Games every four years. The Asian Games has been held for 14 times since its first session in 1951.

It took 51 years until the fourteenth Asian Games. China's first participation in the Asian Games was the Seventh Asian Games held in Tehran, Iran, in 1974.
