Xuchang’s long history

Emperor Yao period

Xuchang was called "Xu" in ancient times. It originated from the Yao period when Gao Shixu cultivated the land by herding and washed his ears on the shore of Yingshui River.

Spring and Autumn and Warring States

During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, the Xu lands were successively occupied by Zheng and Chu. They belong to Han, Wei and Chu. In the seventeenth year of the Qin Dynasty (230 BC), the Qin Dynasty established Yingchuan County and governed Yangdi (Yindi, today's Yuzhou City).

Three Kingdoms Period

During the Three Kingdoms Period, Wei was called Yingchuan County and belonged to Yuzhou. Jian'an District, Yingyin County, Yanling County, Changshe County, etc. all belonged to Yingchuan County. Xuchang is one of the five capitals of Wei. In the second year of Wei Huangchu in the Wei Kingdom (221), Emperor Wen of Wei Cao Pi changed Xuxian County to "Xuchang County" because "the Han Dynasty died in Xu, and Wei Jichang was in Xu".

During the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties

In the Yuan Dynasty, Xu was still a state, and Changshe, Changge and Xiangcheng counties belonged to it. Yanling belongs to Kaifeng Prefecture. In the first year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1368), Changshe County was abolished and merged into Xuzhou, with 4 counties under its control, including Changge and Xiangcheng.

At the end of the Ming Dynasty, Li Zicheng's uprising army changed Yuzhou into Junping Prefecture. In the early Qing Dynasty, Xuzhou and Yuzhou belonged to Henan Province. In the second year of Yongzheng (1724), Xuzhou was promoted to Zhili Prefecture, and Changge belonged to it. Yanling belongs to Kaifeng Prefecture.

In the thirteenth year of Yongzheng (1735), Xuzhou was promoted to Xuzhou Prefecture, and Linying, Yancheng, Xiangcheng, Changge, Mi County (today's Xinmi City), and Xinzheng belonged to it. Xuzhou Prefecture and Kaifeng Prefecture are both under the jurisdiction of Henan Province.
