Origin of the name Cixi

Cixi, the county seat is in today’s Cicheng. It was named because there is a stream in the south and Dong An of the Eastern Han Dynasty had a legend about "a loving mother and a filial son". In 1954, the administrative region was adjusted. The current city is composed of the northern parts of the original three counties of Cixi, Yuyao and Zhenhai (commonly known as the "Three Norths"). In October 1988, the counties were removed and established as a city. Cixi has superior natural conditions, a mild and humid climate all year round, four distinct seasons, and belongs to the north subtropical monsoon climate zone. The southeastern part of the city is a low mountainous and hilly area with many trees and fruits; the central and western parts are vast plains with fertile soil and rich specialties, rich in fruits and vegetables and other agricultural products; the north is Hangzhou Bay, with a 77-kilometer coastline and extremely rich reserves With nearly 100,000 acres of tidal flat resources that can be reclaimed and developed in the near future, it is one of the areas with the most abundant land reserve resources in the province. Cixi has three traditional regional cultures: celadon culture, reclamation culture, and immigration culture. During the Jin and Tang Dynasties, Cixi Shanglin Lake celadon was sold overseas, establishing a "Maritime Silk Road" leading to the world.
