How to promote reading in rural schools

In the torrent of social development, most rural primary schools are facing the loss of students and the shortage of teachers, and a large part of them are dying out. Under the difficulties and crises, there are also many opportunities, and reading promotion is undoubtedly the most correct way to solve the difficulties.

Combining my nearly 10 years of work experience in promoting reading in rural schools, I have summarized the following four points for reference:

1. Create a strong bookish atmosphere.

The creation of a campus reading environment will have a subtle effect on children. If the campus is full of books, children will develop good reading habits in silence.

First, build a school library

The construction of a school library is the primary condition for promoting reading. Rural primary schools can obtain books in three ways: distributed by the education department, purchased by themselves, or applied to reading charity organizations. Public welfare organizations such as Guixin Foundation and Responsible Action have books available for application.

The location of the school library is also very important. Choosing it in a place where children often pass by will increase the utilization rate. The layout of the library should be combined with the physical and mental characteristics of primary school students, full of childlike interest, and specially designed for children.

When operating a library, teachers with a strong sense of responsibility and a love for reading can be arranged to serve as librarians. Develop a management system and train student librarians to assist teachers in the management of the bookstore.

Secondly, create a class book corner

Some people say, "If you want children to fall in love with reading, put books where they can easily reach them." Construction is particularly important.

In order to mobilize the enthusiasm of the children, when I was building the class book corner, I allowed the children to participate in the entire process from the selection and installation of the bookshelves to the layout of the book corner environment and finally the determination of the name of the book corner. I still remember that when the bookshelf was first bought, it was assembled on campus by the senior students, while the junior students stood in a circle and watched, applauding and cheering from time to time.

When naming the book corner, everyone voted and screened, and each name was full of personality and childlike interest, such as "Scholarly House", "Happy Garden", "Little Black Fish", It became the name of each book corner.

If the class book corner highlights the source, you can borrow some from the library and the students can donate some. With high-quality books, it is convenient for students to borrow them, which makes the reading atmosphere in the class stronger and arouses students' enthusiasm for reading.

Third, create an open book bar on campus

Open book bars can be set up in the stairwells and corridors of school teaching buildings. The completion of these book bars provides children with a comfortable, comfortable and free reading space. Between classes and before and after meals, there are often children standing, sitting, lying down, or lying down reading in the book bar.

In the open book bar, try to place some newly purchased books or brochures of new books, and also display the excellent works of children.

Fourth, arrange the campus reading environment

You can set up reading slogans in conspicuous locations on campus, and use the school's big screen to push reading quotes. These promotional contents allow teachers and students to start a day of reading life as soon as they step onto campus.

On the campus’s publicity board, a good book recommendation column can be set up; in the green belt of the campus, book-shaped slogans can also be installed; in the corridor on the outer wall of the class, children’s book review cards and handwritten newspapers can be displayed. , read scorecards and more.

The layout of the campus reading environment should give full play to the main role of students, brainstorm and actively innovate. Make every wall speak and create a world with a sense of life for children.

2. Cultivate teachers’ reading habits.

To create a scholarly campus, the first condition is to have teachers who love reading and a principal who loves reading. Teaching by example is more important than teaching by words. Teachers and principals who love reading are role models for students. If you want students to read, you must first make teachers fall in love with reading. If teachers do not read enough, they will not be able to guide students to read well, let alone promote reading continuously.

Teacher reading should first start with parent-child reading. I gave them a suggestion: first find a picture book and tell it to your children at night, so that your children can fall in love with reading first. Slowly the teachers took action.

Teacher Bai read to my daughter at night, and she persisted day by day. My daughter fell in love with reading. During the final unified examination, she was the only one who scored 92 points in the Chinese language test. This made me see the power of reading. Other teachers in the school saw the effectiveness of reading and joined the ranks, teaching and reading to their children. Seeing the progress of my children, I started thinking: If I read with the children in my class, will they make progress? My child has fallen in love with reading. Will it save me more effort to take Chinese classes? If a child falls in love with reading, will it help his math scores? What about class management? With these questions in mind, they began to try. The results were quite satisfactory, so more people joined in.

Secondly, we must hold a good reading exchange meeting for teachers. Teachers’ reading exchange meetings are an important way to promote teachers’ reading, an important platform for teachers’ growth, and an important carrier for group growth and building a scholarly campus. After teachers study, exchange meetings are the best way to output. Several people share and communicate in a relaxed environment. They can not only feel the power of companionship, but also learn from each other and learn from each other's strengths.

Third, the reward mechanism must keep up. The selection of monthly and annual scholarly teachers is an affirmation and encouragement for teachers to read. You can also use the weekly meeting time to let teachers do simple sharing.

3. Plan and promote reading activities.

Rich and colorful reading activities can well promote the development of children's reading habits.

In rural schools, various forms of reading activities can be organized based on the actual situation of the school, such as storytelling, essay writing, hand-written newspapers, speeches, recitations, etc. The holding of these activities builds a display environment for students. The platform also allows the books they read to be exported. The summary and commendation after the activity can better mobilize the enthusiasm of the students.

The school can also hold a wide range of reading activities. In the first half of the year, a month-long reading display activity can be designed based on World Book Day. For example, this year we can use drama as the theme, and let students read the book first, then choose the script, arrange and practice it themselves, and then perform it before the end of the month. Next year, we can use "Handmade Books" as the theme. First, read books and consult information, then design handmade books, display them together, summarize and commend them, etc. The one-month series of reading activities can better showcase the talents of students, allowing them to use their brains and hands-on skills to maximize the effect of reading.

The school also selects "Reading Little Stars", "Bookish Families", etc. for students who love reading during a semester or a school year to set an example. Driven by the role models around them, it is easier to form a reading atmosphere.

If the school conditions permit, it would be even better if it can offer reading courses. With the guidance of the curriculum and the intervention of the school administration, the road to reading promotion will be smoother.

4. Parent-child reading can help you travel far.
