MPEG files can be divided into three layers according to the different compression quality and coding complexity (mpegaudiololayer 1/2/3 corresponding to mp 1, mp2 and mp3 respectively. The compression rate of MPEG audio coding is very high. The compression rates of mp 1 and mp2 are 4: 1 and 6: 1-8: 1 respectively.

The compression ratio of mp3 is as high as10:1-12:1,which means that one minute of cd-quality music needs 10MB of storage space without compression, while mp3 only needs about 10MB after compression coding, and the sound quality is basically the same.

The bits of mp3 are encoded by a coding algorithm called "perceptual coding technology": when encoding, the frequency spectrum of the audio file is analyzed first, then the noise frequency is filtered by a filter, and then the remaining bits are quantized and scattered.
