How to locate and track Apple's lost mobile phone?

If you have lost your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, or you think it may have been stolen, the following steps may help you find it and protect your data.

If Find My iPhone is turned on, you can use this feature to find your device.

If Find My iPhone is enabled on the missing device

You can use Find My iPhone to find your device, and then take other measures to help you find your device and protect your data.

Sign in to icloud.com/find on a Mac or PC, or use the Find My iPhone application on another iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

Find your device. Open Find My iPhone, and then select the device you want to locate on the map. If the device is nearby, you can ask it to play a prompt tone to help you or others nearby find it.

Turn on "Lost Mode". In lost mode, you can remotely lock the device with a four-digit password, display customized information including your phone number on the lock screen of the lost device, and track the location of the device. After erasing the information on the device, all your information (including the credit card or debit card used for Apple Pay) will be deleted from the device, and you will not be able to use Find My iPhone to find the device. After the information on the device is erased, the device cannot be tracked. If you remove the device from your account after erasing it, the activation lock will be closed. At this point, others will be able to activate and use your device.

If you use home sharing, any family member can help find other members' lost devices. Just let your family members log in to iCloud with Apple ID, and then you can find all the devices associated with this family sharing account.

What should I do if my iOS device is turned off or offline?

If Find My iPhone was not turned on before the device was lost or stolen, you can't use it to locate the device. However, you can help protect your data by performing the following steps:

Change your Apple ID password. By changing the Apple ID password, you can prevent anyone from accessing iCloud data or using other services (such as iMessage or iTunes) from a lost device.

Change the password of other Internet accounts on the device. This may include email, Facebook or Twitter accounts.

Report the loss or theft of equipment to the local law enforcement department. Law enforcement may ask you to provide the serial number of the equipment. Find the serial number of your device.

Report lost or stolen equipment to your wireless carrier. Your operator can deactivate your account and prevent the use of phone calls, text messages and data.

Lost devices can only be tracked or located by "Find My iPhone". If Find My iPhone was not enabled before the device was lost, no other Apple service can find, track or tag your device.
