Chinese is a polysemous word, usually referred to as language, literature and culture for short. Its original meaning is "language". Chinese is generally regarded as a comprehensive subject of language and culture.

When it comes to the nature of Chinese subject, there are really different opinions. According to statistics, there are as many as 12 expressions about the nature of Chinese subject in the monograph "Teaching Method of Chinese in Primary and Secondary Schools" published during the period of 1980- 1989. Some people further distinguish and generalize from essential attributes and general attributes.

Which expression is more correct? First of all, it depends on whether it conforms to the qualitative stipulation of Chinese subject, among which "helicity", "linearity", "unity", "knowledge" and "scientificity" can obviously be used to express the characteristics of many subjects without qualitatively distinguishing Chinese subject from other subjects.

Secondly, logically, some people use "fundamental" and "instrumental", "comprehensive" and "unity", "knowledge" and "scientific" in a statement, but these concepts themselves have vague boundaries, and some even have overlapping and inclusion relations, so it is illogical to use them together here.

In addition, "practicality" and "skill" should belong to the category of operating principles and methods of Chinese teaching, rather than the definition of the essence of Chinese subject. Nevertheless, these viewpoints reveal the vertical and horizontal relations of Chinese subject from the inside out to some extent.
