What is the origin of International Women Judges Day?

On April 28th, 20021,the 75th United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to establish the International Day of Women Judges, and on March 28th, 2022, 10 was designated as the first International Day of Women Judges.

The resolution states that women's active participation in decision-making at all levels on equal terms with men is essential for achieving equality, sustainable development, peace and democracy, and efforts should be made to formulate and implement appropriate and effective national strategies and plans to improve women's position in the leadership, management and other levels of the judicial system and institutions.

Ma Yuan, the first female judge in New China.

Ma Yuan, 1955, graduated from the graduate program of Law Department of Renmin University of China, and later served as a faculty member of Peking University Law Department. 1963 transferred to the Supreme People's Court, 1985 Ma Yuan served as vice president of the Supreme People's Court.

As the first female judge in New China, Ma Yuan is proficient in law and has rich practical experience. In more than 30 years of trial work, she has handled a large number of civil disputes such as marriage, family and inheritance, and presided over the drafting of a large number of judicial interpretations.

Ma Yuan also actively participated in national legislative activities, especially put forward many valuable opinions on the formulation and drafting of People's Republic of China (PRC) Law of Succession, General Principles of People's Republic of China (PRC) Civil Law and Administrative Procedure Law of the People's Republic of China.
