5.1 The origin of Labor Day

International Labor Day is also known as "May 1st International Labor Day", "International Demonstration Day" (International Labor Day or May Day)

This festival originated from the Workers' Congress in Chicago, USA strike. On May 1, 1886, more than 216,000 workers in Chicago went on strike for an eight-hour working day. After a bloody and arduous struggle, they finally won a victory. To commemorate this great workers' movement, in July 1889, the Second International announced May 1st as International Labor Day.

After the founding of New China, the Government Affairs Council of the Central People's Government designated May 1 as the statutory Labor Day in December 1949, a national holiday. On this day every year, the whole country celebrates. People put on their festive costumes and gather happily in parks, theaters, and squares to participate in various celebration rallies or cultural, sports and entertainment activities, and to commend workers who have made outstanding contributions.

On September 18, 1999, the State Council of China issued the "Decision of the State Council on Amending the Measures for National Holidays and Memorial Days", which revised for the first time the regulations issued by the Chinese Government Affairs Council on December 23, 1949. The "National Holidays and Anniversary Holidays Measures" add the statutory holidays of the Spring Festival, May Day and National Day to the statutory holidays, and the country has 7 days of holidays, forming three "golden weeks".

On December 14, 2007, the State Council of China revised the "National Festival and Anniversary Holiday Measures" for the second time, adjusting the starting time of the Spring Festival holiday from the first day of the first lunar month to New Year's Eve; "Day" has been adjusted from 7 days to 3 days, reducing by 4 days; Tomb Sweeping Day, Dragon Boat Festival, and Mid-Autumn Festival have been added as legal holidays, with 3 days off each. The May Day Golden Week will also become history. From 2008, the May Day Golden Week will become the May Day holiday. 3 days short vacation.
