What is the history of the statues of Wenting and Wen Yiduo at Tsinghua University?

"Wen Ting and Wen Yi Duo" in "Tsinghua Scenery"

On the earth mountain in the northeast corner of Shuimu Tsinghua Lotus Pond, you can see it by climbing along the stone steps. A hexagonal pavilion shaded by pines and bamboos. This is Wenting, commemorating the famous poet, scholar, and outstanding democracy fighter Mr. Wen Yiduo.

When the school was first established, this place was originally a bell pavilion, with an ancient bell from the Ming Dynasty four feet in diameter hanging inside. The bell's ringing sound could be heard throughout Haidian District.

In 1912, a 13-year-old Ejiao boy was admitted to the Tsinghua University Preparatory School in Beijing. From then on, he went to and from class every day to the sound of bells, devoted himself to reading, founded the Tsinghua Literary Society after school, and often wrote poems and compiled newspapers.

In the past ten years, Wen Yiduo has achieved outstanding academic performance and extensive knowledge. He also organized a "school worker night school" to provide the most simple help to nearby villagers. During this period, he responded to the inspiration of Li Dazhao and others and became an active figure in the patriotic student movement.

After the May 4th Movement broke out, Wen Yiduo wrote Yue Fei's "Man Jiang Hong" overnight and posted it in front of the dining room door. He gave speeches, wrote new poems, and became one of the pioneers of new literature and art. In 1921, the "June 3rd Massacre" occurred in Beijing. Wen Yiduo and 29 other classmates participated in the strike to protest, and were punished for this by repeating a grade. Only in the second year were they able to go abroad to continue their studies.

After the "July 7th Incident", the school moved south, Tsinghua Garden was destroyed by the Japanese invaders, and the Bell Pavilion was unfortunately destroyed.

At this time, Wen Yiduo, who was already a representative poet of the Crescent Party and a professor at Southwest Associated University, felt sad for the current situation, abandoned his illusions, and actively devoted himself to the struggle against Japan, national salvation, democracy, and anti-dictatorship. .

On July 15, 1946, at the memorial meeting for Li Gongpu, Wen Yiduo stood up and delivered the famous "Last Speech". That afternoon, he was assassinated by secret agents at the age of 46.

A year later, at the initiative of Pan Guangdan, an alumnus of the same class, classmates raised funds to rebuild Zhongting and named it Wenting. The pavilion style was designed by Liang Sicheng, and Pan Guangdan wrote the inscription. The ancient bell in the pavilion was moved from another place.

In October 1986, the school built a statue of Wen Yiduo under the pavilion. Among the green pines and cypresses, Mr. Wang was still wearing a long gown, holding a pipe in his hand, and looked at the teachers and students coming and going with kind and resolute eyes.

Occasionally, the distant bells still ring through the long river of time and space, as if they have never forgotten: "The poet's main talent is love, love for his motherland and love for his people."
