Where is Mount Everest?
Mount Everest, referred to as Everest for short, is 8844.43 meters above sea level (rock surface elevation) and the snow surface elevation is 8848.86 meters. It is the main peak of the Himalayas, located on the border between the people of China and Nepal, with an east longitude of 86.9 degrees and a north latitude of 27.9 degrees. It is an approximately east-west arc mountain system, with the northern slope in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau of China and the southern slope in Nepal.
Mulangma Peak has a unique natural landscape, including rivers, lakes, glaciers, periglacial, sandstorms and other landform types and its complex modern surface morphology, as well as many geological and historical sites, such as the Pliocene three-toed horse fossil group in Nieluxiong County and the alpine fossil group in Xixiabangma Peak, which have important scientific and aesthetic values.
Mount Qomolangma is 4900 meters above sea level, and it is located in Rongbu Temple, the highest temple in the world, which was founded by the Buddhist Lama Awang Tenzin Rob in the 25th year of Guangxu reign in Qing Dynasty (1899). This is the end of ordinary tourists' tour and the last civilization in front of Everest base camp. Rongbu Temple is also the best place to see Mount Everest. The linear distance between them is 25 kilometers.
Geology of mount Everest
From the perspective of geological research, Mount Qomolangma is not a whole fixed rock, but consists of three parts from top to bottom, namely, Mount Qomolangma Formation, Beiao Formation and Rongbu Formation.
Mount Everest is the top of the mountain, with snow all year round and an altitude of over 8600 meters. Most of the rock formations on Mount Qomolangma belong to the Obei Formation of 7000-8600 meters. The Ordovician can be divided into two parts, the upper part of which is between 8,200 meters and 8,600 meters, so it is called "yellow belt", hence the name "yellow rock exposed outside the ice and snow". From 7000 meters above sea level to the foot of the mountain, it is a velvet stratum composed of quartz schist and thin layer of timely marble.
Mount Qomolangma is a typical fault block rising peak. There is a thrust fault zone between the basement of Precambrian metamorphic rock series and the overlying sedimentary rock series, and the early Paleozoic strata are napped on Proterozoic strata from north to south along this zone. The upper part of the peak is early Ordovician or Cambrian-Ordovician calcareous rock series (the peak is gray limestone), and the lower part is Cambrian argillaceous rock series (such as phyllite and schist), invaded by granite and migmatite veins.
